I’m going against the grain, and say I like the second half of “Full Metal Jacket”, but I don’t think it’s the best Vietnam movie.

“Apocalypse Now” is a great movie, but it’s too far fetched. There are scenes from the movie which are awesome, but the overall storyline of going to kill Col Kurtz is too far fetched (too fictional).

I saw “Platoon” at the movie theater the day I graduated basic training. It’s more realistic of a Vietnam movie, but there was something just not right (can’t put my finger on it).

“Casualties of War” was great because it was a true story. I think it was Sean Penn’s best work.

“We We’re Soldiers” is a great movie, and a true story, but it’s one off to me. I’m not sure why, I think the story’s too many holes in it.

Seems like the topic is chock-full of also rans

Rambo (I like first blood part II better)
Dead Presidents
Deer Hunter
Tropic Thunder ( )
Good Morning Vietnam

Off the top of my head, there are plenty of entertaining movies “loosely based” around Vietnam, but movies tend to focus on its unpopularity, and how it destroyed the people who went there more than what went on there

Platoon end of discussion

Forrest Gump would be the winner hands down but it's so much more

Apocalypse now is probably the best movie ever made , until it's about 2/3s done.

It's often called Oliver Stoneness...He just has to prove a point in his movies and the movie then gets heavy-handed...Platoon is a great movie but he needed to take a step back.

He fought for a decade to make this movie and then wanted to include every 70s media perception into the film.

He made a Vietnam movie for the protesters, because that sold...and included every cliche beyond Americans spitting on Charlie Sheen at the airport as he came back from the war.

What's off about the movie is the soldiers are shown in the worst media light.

Coming Home in a Body Bag is my all-time favorite movie. My friend Clarence turned me onto it. It was Lee Donowitz's high water mark as a director. I just wish he hadn't died tragically while making Body Bag II while negotiating to distribute Dr. Zhivago. I have seen some of the dailies and they looked epic but very expensive.

Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter are easily the best and I don't know a close third other than the first half of FMJ.

But, then again, neither one of Those films are what you'd really consider "war" movies, either.

One is about a psychedelic journey into insanity and the other is about lost inncoence and childhood friendships... So there's that.

Absolutely couldn't agree more. The Refux (my personal favorite version) even has the same flaw. As sson as they get to Kurtz... The film nosedives into blubbering made up bullshite by Brando.

Before that, it's beyond reproach.

Platoon is the most hackneyed, clichèd Vietnam movie ever made. It's got every Vietnam era protestor's tropes packed in. Turrible.

I agree as I posted above but its still a very well made movie with a narrative that is compelling...but obviously, Oliver Stone has to be Oliver Stone.

It took Mel Gibson to change the selling point. That not all Vietnam movies have to be about drug addict, murdering psychotic soldiers that Hollywood was in love with... Maybe, like any other war they were just soldiers... And fought with duty and honor.

But despite it being an obnoxious cliche Vietnam War movie that tries to push all the outrageous political buttons...its still really fricking well made.

Yeah that charge up the hill at the end of the movie was a bit much.
