Can someone explain the "Wayne Brady makes Bryan Gumble look like Malcom X" joke?

never understood the reference, but the follow up skit with Wayne was hilarious.

Greg and Bryant Gumbel were regarded as the whitest black men to ever live.

eta: does it imply wayne is even more white than they are?

Wayne Brady is so white that he makes another guy who is so white look like an angry black dude.

Bryan Gumble
Bryant Gumbel.
Was on the Today show for 15 years, but left in 1997. He was, as folks have put it, considered a "very white black man".
That being said, if you didn't grow up watching him on the Today show, then I imagine the joke would not make a lot of sense to you.

Because Malcolm X was seen as a very black mother fricker at the time.

He and his brother were good on Gumble to Gumble.

Let's put it this way... As a white person, I can do impressions of Wayne Brady and Bryant Gumbel and it wouldn't be considered racist.

Ok. But do you know that in 2024?

i don't keep up with the Gumbles.

my only exposure to Wayne Brady, at the time, was Who's Line Is It Anyway? and this one, or two, sketches from The Chapelle Show.

I saw a behind the scenes video of that sketch and Brady was really struggling with "Is Wayne Brady going to have to choke a bitch" line, and was workshopping other ideas with Chappelle. Obviously they just settled on the original dialogue.

Because Bryant still likes women?

Aside from what the OP is asking I didn't know about Paul Mooney until the Chappelle show. I laughed pretty hard at just about everything he did on Chappelle show.
Negrodamus, Mooney on movies, Ask a Black Dude.
Other things Mooney did: wrote for Richard Pryor, In Living Color (created Homey D Clown) and Good Times.
