Their big annual Christmas Eve party—who does that?

Isn’t everyone usually with their own families on Christmas Eve?

Was watching it tonight and realized Blair was only gone a month and was already engaged.

Actually, it used to be quite common. We would sometimes hit two or three on Christmas Eve. Come to think of it the parties would be thrown by people that did not have small children, but lots of them had teenagers.

Best party night of the year, IMO. Everybody is in a cheerful mood.

My aunt and uncle had a big Christmas Eve party for about 20ish years until my uncle passed. It was very similar to the one depicted in CwtK in that it was a ton of neighborhood people, friends and family and something everyone looked at as a staple of the Christmas season.

Pretty sure it’s still fairly common.

I hate this movie. All the characters are horrible people.

And she was divorced and he stole everything from her within a year.

Tim Allen's character went out of his way to be a mega douche about "skipping Christmas."

There is a reference in the movie that she ran off on that trip to shack up with the guy she is engaged to, so she already knew him.

They went to Brown together and her parents actually met him a couple times already

Luther says Enrique is: "The guy that you went down there to shack up with"

I think it was implied that she left and joined the peace corps to follow Enrique whom she was already "friends" with. AKA they were dating already

It felt like it crossed the line from funny to cringe though.

A family I am very good friends with does this exact thing. It's a tradition they have kept up that the dad's parents started and he remembers from his childhood. He is about 65 and his parents have passed long ago. They do the whole big Christmas dinner, complete with ham, turkey and dressing, etc. You do not bring anything, unless you bring a gift for them or wine, booze. It's a party for young and old. It's for all their family and close friends, close friends of their kids, etc. I've been several times and it's wonderful.

The best part is that on Christmas Day, they open presents, have some breakfast casserole or kolaches and just hang out all day in their pjs, watching movies and playing games with just the close family. They love it this way and say they share it with their friends and then get the best Christmas Day ever because there is no stree at all. They have leftovers and enjoy each other.

Oh, I also have a 2nd friend who does this. Her family is scattered and she makes a huge gumbo on Christmas Eve and has a big open house for all her friends. Then Christmas Day is present opening and chill out with immediate family.

We did it for many years before kids.

In 1987, when I was unmarried and in grad school, all my buddies and I spent Christmas Eve at Cooter Brown's drinking too much beer and playing a football video game (Quarterback, I think)

Stayed out late and went home, fell asleep on the floor in front of the Christmas tree.

This type of Christmas Eve went on for the next couple of years. Fun, but I wanted something a little classier. But no one had their own place, and we had nowhere to go.

A few years later I had graduated, had a job, a fiancee' and most importantly my own place, a half-double in Lakeview. So I decided to throw a Christmas Eve party to give all of my buddies (and their girlfriends/ fiancees/wives) and family and co-workers someplace to go. Called it a "Reveillon Party", after the New Orleans tradition. Got a lot of booze, wine and beer, had a lot of basic party finger foods but I also cooked up a lot of traditional New Orleans creole dishes -- eggs hussarde, daube glace', rabbit terrine, a yule log cake, and a big pot of seafood gumbo. It was a popular hit, and we continued it for the next 7 years or so until we had our first child.

After that had to play Santa-- assemble and put out toys, etc., so that was the end of that. But it was a fun run and we ALWAYS had a good crowd. We'd even have some folks come to the party, leave and go to midnight mass, then come BACK because it would still be going on.

When I was a kid, there were at least 3 families within 2 blocks from my house who had these neighborhood parties. It was great as a kid. The kids would hang out outside and walk up and down the street like we were cool. Eventually one of the group would steal a couple beers and they'd end up being shared. We thought we were bad asses! The adults would visit the various parties. Some years, more families would host them. I remember my parents did when I was older but I was old enough to hang out elsewhere by that time.

Different times.
