To be fair they didn’t know what she’d look like in 30 years when they cast her. Not sure who would’ve played the role better.

McGillis was aight.
Older chick, instructor vibes.
Definitely a short term relationship for Maverick though. I’m sure it didn’t take long for him to move on from that.
And Cougar was definitely not cut out for the military.

Cougra wasn't a pussy, he just "lost the edge" as he said in the middle of a flight by not compartmentalizing anymore.
The technical advisor on Top Gun, in his DVD commentary, said that scene, while embellished, is actually one of the more accurate pieces peotraye about fighter pilots and what can happen to them.
He said it is a very real thing for elite pilots who got into the game as young single men, to begin thinking about their mortality and their families with such a dangerous profession.
He said he has even seen it first hand. Guys will just lose it one day and can't get it back... And you can't have that in a combat squadron.

Merlin had some balls, though.
Stuck in the rear while Cougar zoned out and almost crashed them and not only stayed in the Navy but apparently volunteered to be the RIO and fly into combat with Maverick, who at the time was another pilot that had just recently lost his shite.

Besides physical fitness and high testosterone levels, its why we send young men into war. Thinking about mortality is rare at that age, everyone thinks they're going to live forever... Getting a dose of fear of mortality can be a shock to the system.
The average age of pilots in WW2 was 21.
Wave after wave of American pilots were sent in the Battle of Midway with almost none returning. They were young and green as the war had just started and probably weren't told the realities of them surviving their carrier attacks.
How old was Cougar? He says he almost orphaned his kid he's never seen but then its revealed he has multiple kids?
While Mav isn't married, doesn't have kids and rides a death cycle in the Kawasaki GPZ900R or Ninja. The entire arc of Top Gun is that Mav isn't mature enough to understand realities or understand that taxpayers own his plane while he's leaving his wingman to play around with Migs and flip them the bird.

They were all O-2s and O-3s, so, basically mid-late 20s...mayyybe early 30s. (Cruise was actually only about 23 or 24 in real life), but regardless, plenty old enough to have a family.
The picture in the plane was of his wife and young infant son. He could have easily married her after the Academy/OCS then went to flight school for 2-4 years (barely seeing her) and then got her pregnant just before being assigned to a boat for another 12-15 months, and probably never even saw his kid before in person.
He sees a MIG for the first time ever, gets scared shitless thinking about orphaning his child, and hangs it up.
People are human. Not everyone is wired to be a warrior and a killer, no matter how much as they try to convince themselves they are.

This is the one thing that has always bugged me in the movie. Ice asks "So, Maverick, who was watching Cougar's wing while you were showboating with the MiG?"
Mav's reply is something like Cougar was doing just fine on his own.Why didn't he point out that they had already dealt with the first Mig and it had bugged out? It was the Mig engaging Cougar that Mav was dicking around with, after getting him off Cougar's tail.

kelly had terrible brows and teeth. decent job but not a looker imo. the most annoying aspect of tyne movie is them constantly looking over their shoulders when a jet went by. oh yeah i got my eye on him now. 3 point turn and let's get em.

True, but he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a frickin' boat.

Because frick Iceman. That’s why. He wasn’t worth the time to sit there and explain things in detail to.
Also, it would have been weird dialogue at that moment.

How about Maverick being a dick and throwing Goose's dog tags in the ocean
frick giving them to Goose's ole lady or his kid. Maverick decides that it’s better to just chunk those bastards into the ocean. Selfish prick.
Not to mention that Maverick throws like a fricking girl

Kelly was a Cougar. That's what they were thinking.

What about Demi Moore? I guess she was too young looking? I think she was around 25 when this came out.

Yeah, the role was for a hot teacher milf.

Y’all are killing me dogging on Kelly McGillis. I was just coming of age when I saw that movie and things began to happen to my mind and body that I was not prepared for. Confused the hell out of me in the theater. I’ll never be able to view her any other way than a woman with super powers. Well, until I look at current pictures. Yikes!
