In French, so not sure if I'll watch. I regret reading the comments

Looks like a proper historical epic. Hopefully it releases here in theater.

The 2002 version with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce is one of my favorites. Pearce in particular is awesome as the backstabbing best friend. Also starred Richard Harris and a young Henry Cavill.

The French....this is their great American Novel and they keep going back to the well.

The story is so good, I'll probably seek it out.

But how many times are they gonna remake this?

It's like America's "Little Women". It's been done over and over.

I know he’s an alt right weirdo but the Jim Caviezel one is fantastic. They should’ve left it at that.

Just from the comments, it's my understanding that the previous movie(s) made significant changes. Maybe this one is closer to the book?

Much like Disney’s interpretation of Three Musketeers, the count of Monte Cristo is a much more Disney ending to a tragic tale than what happened in the actual book.

Both of them end similarly, but a bit more depressing. The good guys win, but they don’t get their happy ever after as depicted in the movies

I know I will watch bc I love the book. I saw the most recent movie before reading the book. I loved the book and the ending in the book more.

As I read the book I thought this would be an absolute masterpiece of a 3/4 season 10 episode series if done with high production value like GOT- AS LONG AS THEY KEPT IT AS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK.

However, with hollywood’s recent agenda it would be a travesty.

Hopefully, the French stay true to the tale.

It’s just about perfect isn’t it? I’m sure we could pick it apart a bit, and there’s a certain something lacking, but not sure how you’d improve it further.

Maybe some of the dialogue? Particularly Mondego’s, who is a bit over the top villainy. The actor who played Villefort was excellent, easy to hate, and gets one of the best scenes in the prison chariot.

Also, in the book, Edmond’s former friends did way WAY more than just bang his true love, but it’s understandably difficult to capture all that in a 2 hour movie.

For me, I read a short story version in French class, then watched the 2002 version in theaters a couple years later, and finally read the book around 2011. I found the book to be long and meandering with a lot of forgettable side characters - maybe that’s just my millennial attention span, however. I’ll be watching this one, but I doubt it will hold a candle to my beloved Jim Cavezil version.

He's a Christian. In Hollywood, that's all it takes to get that label.

I didn't make the connection from the quote in Shawshank about the book "maybe we should file it under Educational?" until I saw the movie in 2002.
Excellent movie BTW.
