Daniel Dae Kim (The Hot Zone: Anthrax, Hawaii Five-0) is set to star in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series.
Kim will play Fire Lord Ozai, the ruthlessly driven leader of the Fire Nation who demands that everyone live up to his impossible standards, especially his teenage son, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu). Ozai’s drive to conquer and unite the world under firebender rule is a family burden — he believes that it’s his destiny to finish a war started by his ancestors.
Absolute perfect casting. While I’m still apprehensive on this project, the casting has been seemingly spectacular. If they get Ken Wantanabe as Iroh, then they’ve got it going with that at least. I hope that this isn’t a disappointment.

Just recreate the cartoon scene for scene and they can’t lose.

Dsnile Dae Kim is Korean. Isn't Last Airbender supposed to be kind of Tibetan/Mongolian/Chinese/Japanese influnece?
How is this not cultural appropriation for a fictitious land?

I think they’re going to be pretty liberal with that. Kyoshi Island is clearly based on the Geishas and they’re Japanese despite being Earth Kingdom on the show.
Plus for LOST fans Yunjin Kim has to be Ursa:

The most important casting, IMO, is Azula.
She is my favorite character.

From what I’m hearing is they did Team Avatar first and then went casting Ozai, Iroh, and Azula. I’m willing to bet Daniel verbally agreed to this role years ago given that he’s already portrayed two Avatar villains and is the very clear choice to be a live action Ozai. Iroh and Azula they have to recruit though.

Cast has been solid so far but I’ll hold my breath until the trailer at least
Just realized Daniel also did the voice of Hiroshi Sato and the crazy general from the first episode of season 2

This is out of left field, but I think Stephen McKinley Henderson would make a good Iroh.
After seeing him in Dune as Thufir Hawat, I’ll pick him as my dark horse.

The first live action attempt, all other shitty aspects aside, failed miserably in its depiction of “bending”.

I’m holding my breath until it’s release. Remember how awesome M Night’s teaser trailer was? That was a better scene than anything in the film: YouTube
I remember watching it and thinking “Oh that must be where he meets Roku after charging the Fire Nation brigade and they keep attacking him.” Yeah, Roku isn’t even in the fricking film (which removing him is like removing Dumbledore in Harry Potter) and nothing this badass remotely happened.

Well it was by design of Shyamalan. Like he went on stage once and said “Well obviously firebending is the most powerful form so I had to nerf them.”
Are they Shyamalan?

To be fair that airbending technique wasn’t confirmed until Korra

Neither was Suki, I remember watching a video of a bunch of pissed off Avatar fans on opening night and one of the girls came dressed up as Suki

I’m willing to bet any bending technique you can imagine that is possible is indeed possible.

I mean it’s pretty much confirmed now that’s how Gyatso killed all those Fire Nation soldiers

Yeah, but Suki isn’t really important until the second season. If you were to adapt it as masterfully as Jackson did Lord of the Rings, she’d be in the movie for maybe 6 minutes and that night sleeping Aang receives the vision of the comet and they depart from Kyoshi Island to Roku’s Island.

Exactly. As Uncle Iroh says in the very first episode “Fire comes from the breath, not the muscle.” And so if you’re trying to mass kill a bunch of Comet enhanced firebenders… yeah, he killed them on mass that way but was eventually overwhelmed.

It was clunky and looked weird. It needs to be streamlined for live action.
It needs to be more fluid like the show.
Earthbending should involve moving around the scene, not just doing the motions in one spot.
There needs to be more “activity”.
The movie did a poor job of showing the actual bending.

Didn’t the original creators pull out of this and move on to something else? My expectations are tempered if so.

Mike and Bryan are actually moving on to make both shows and movies from the Avatar universe. So during the pandemic Avatar was put on Netflix and it broke the record of being on Netflix’s Top 10 for the longest period of time, being on there from March until October of last year. Due to this the retards at Viacom finally figured out that they have been sitting on the next Star Wars/Lord of the Rings for years.
But Mike and Bryan walked away from the project due to “creative differences,” so while the casting has been spot on I still am not optimistic about this project. However Paramount came up to them after leaving the live action show and pretty much have given Mike and Bryan a huge blank check to do whatever the frick they want in the same manner they gave Matt and Trey of South Park.
The rumor is they’ve got the green light for 3 more series (Earth and Fire Avatar and another prequel series) and 6 movies. And with the movies apparently each one has the budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, will be 3D animated, and released in theaters. Mike and Bryan have said that this deal will take them around 20 years to complete. Hopefully they haven’t been wokified enough to ruin the universe.
