Does anyone have a definitive explanation of the Maine Justice skits on SNL?

I think they’re funny but what exactly is the reference or joke they’re making? It can’t be as simple as saying Louisiana things in Maine. I haven’t really found a good answer.

My first question is why in the world are you watching snl? They didn’t even honor the great Norm Macdonald…

At the time LA was a hot area for making movies and tv shows and while some embraced being in LA, most tried to pretend that an obviously-southern area was somewhere else. Hence, you get a skit where they pretend to be in Maine when it's clearly in Louisiana.

Weekend Update played a short highlight reel.
And Butthole Eyes wore a tshirt with Norm's face on it.

The Acadians (French: Acadiens [akadj?~]) are the descendants of the French who settled in Acadia during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Acadia was located in what is now Eastern Canada's Maritime provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island), as well as parts of Quebec, present-day Maine to the Kennebec River, and on the West coast of Newfoundland. Acadia was a distinctly separate colony of New France. It was ethnically, geographically and administratively different from the other French colonies and the French colony of Canada (modern-day Quebec). As a result, the Acadians developed a distinct history and culture.[5] The settlers whose descendants became Acadians primarily came from the southwestern region of France, also known as Occitania, such as the rural areas of Poitou-Charentes and Aquitaine (Gascony)
Most Acadians were deported to various British American colonies, where many were put into forced labour or servitude.[10][11] Some Acadians were deported to England, some to the Caribbean, and some to France. After being expelled to France, many Acadians were eventually recruited by the Spanish government to migrate to Luisiana (present-day Louisiana). Their descendants gradually developed what became known as Cajun culture.[12]

That and the plantiff being confused why everything is cartoonish stereotypical Louisiana in Maine.

Much deeper explanation and some real inside Hollywood stuff going on there, but it makes total sense.
My take on the skit was always that is was just another absurd world type of sketch that has been used numerous times throughout the history of SNL, where evyone else is living in some bizarre land and there's one real, regular person who is speaking from the audience's point of view on the weirdness of it all.
The old Chris Farley Japanese game show skit is basically the same idea.

Black jeopardy uses the same trope as well.

Maybe it’s just because I generally like Keenan, but Black Jeopardy is one of the few skits I find funny and unwoke every single time.

Maine Justice has a great sketch where Andy Samberg is the defendant and is a college student at LSU. Charlie Day plays a Senator who drinks moonshine and wears a toonces flatbill.

its a takeoff on all of the reality shows that were being filmed in Louisiana ten years ago

I think Timberlake was the bailiff in that one.

They did on weekend update, then when Kim Kardashian hosted they made like 10 OJ jokes that I think were more for Norm than her

They also ran a Norm episode in the 9pm hour the week of his death.

I'm pretty sure one of the writers or producers had ties to Louisiana at the time. Probably just a random idea that was thrown out there.

Then get out and stop posting garbage in this thread?

That’s part of it, also Cajuns are descendants of the Acadians who were forced out of Acadia by the British in 1755 during the French and Indian War.
Acadia was right above Maine, so a lot of people in Maine also have French names and use French words, and there is a heavy French influence on culture and architecture there as well. So it’s also playing up the fact that in a lot of ways Northern Main and South Louisiana are similar and that’s kind of funny

I think people are putting way too much thought into this. It's a goofy premise. That's about it.
