Like most Gen X kids, I grew up with the Dukes on afternoon TV. Well, imagine my surprise when I found out the show was based on a little known movie made in 1975 (I think I saw it on Encore).

Yes, there is a Roscoe. Yes, there is an Uncle Jesse. Yes, Waylon is the Balladeer. Yes, there are fire arrows.

I've yet to find Waylon's recording of "Whiskey Man". If anyone knows what album it's on...let me know.

ETA: He had $7 in his pocket, a guitar and he was free. Now what else did he need? And there it was...

It wasn't well known in 1996 when I first saw it.

The Dukes of Hazzard is an American action comedy TV series created by Gy Waldron, that was aired on CBS from January 26, 1979, to February 8, 1985, with a total of 147 episodes produced, spanning seven seasons.

The series was also inspired by the 1975 film Moonrunners, about a bootlegger family, which was written and directed by Waldron and had many identical or similar character names and concepts.

I found it on cable or streaming a couple years ago and was shocked by the similarities and had to look it up.

Until I saw this, I figured Dukes was mostly inspired by the Burt Reynolds "Gator" movies - White Lightning (1973) and Gator (1976). In one of those, Gator talks about a legendary car he saw that had a big rebel flag painted on the top.

According to wiki,
quote:

The film was written and directed by Gy Waldron and is based on the life and stories of ex-moonshiner Jerry Rushing, who has a small role in the movie as a heavy at the Boar's Nest bar.

Jerry Rushing

quote:

Rushing was born into a family business making illegal whiskey. As a young man he became a delivery driver, a job requiring late-night high-speed driving, often without headlights; for this he used a modified 1958 Chrysler 300D capable of 140 mph (225 km/h) speeds, easily more than most police vehicles, which he nicknamed Traveller, after Robert E. Lee's favorite horse Traveller. The car was eventually abandoned when it ran out of fuel during a chase, was sold from a police impound into the private collector's market, and has since been restored by Lawrence Wolfel. Rushing eventually turned to a career in early stock car racing. Among the drivers he raced were Junior Johnson, himself a former moonrunner, and Wendell Scott.

ETA: Could swear I started a thread on this one time, or maybe I just meant to and forgot.

You might have. Hell, I might have. I think about this movie every 5 years or so, and I try to find it to watch. Archive has become my go to site for old, obscure movies and shows. I rewatched Kindred: The Embraced and Jericho the other day.

The drive-ins were packed with country-locals-vs-the-law movies. This one just happened to be done by someone who had the opportunity to repurpose it for a TV series.

I've been trying to determine where the movie is set. They live in the fictional Shiloh Co. In my opinion, it's not in Georgia like the series. It's likely either West/Central, ALabama or Northeast, Alabama. They are always making runs to Florence, AL and given that Rainey is dealing with people from Chicago, it would need to be in close proximity to I-65.

The girl is driving East from Mississippi when she picks up Grady. Outside that, they never mention leaving the state.

If I had to guess, I'd say Walker or Winston Co, AL. I'd probably lean more towards Winston because of Walkers proximity to Birmingham. Rainey wouldn't have the level of control he does if it was in Walker.
