Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall explain why a white actor was cast in ‘Coming to America’

While reminiscing about working on “Coming to America,” Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall divulged telling new details about the casting process for their 1988 comedy classic.
When TV host Jimmy Kimmel asked them Monday about comic Louie Anderson‘s involvement in the franchise, Murphy and Hall revealed that Anderson was tapped because Paramount Pictures insisted on including a white actor in the cast. In the film, Anderson plays Maurice, an employee at fast-food restaurant McDowell’s.

“I love Louie, but I think we were forced to put Louie in it,” Hall said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “We were forced to put a white person.”
"[T]he whole cast is Black — and this was back in the ‘80s — so [Paramount] was like, ‘We have to have a white person! There has to be a white person in the movie,’” Murphy added. “So it was, ‘Who’s the funniest white guy around?’ And Louie, we knew him. We was cool with him. So that’s how Louie got in the movie.”
quote:
On Feb. 24, Anderson responded to a similar anecdote Murphy shared with NBC’s “Today” show. “Wait what?” he tweeted, suggesting he was finding out the truth behind his casting for the first time — or cracking a dry joke about it.

Isn’t Louie Anderson in 2?
Kinda crappy to hear your co-actors in a movie say that they didn’t want you in the movie.
Edit: Unless Louie was a totally unprofessional person on the set and had such a slap in the face coming.

I don’t see the issue. They are doing the exact same thing now.

Body by Jake was a taxi driver in it.

It’d be funny to see where Murphy or Hall would be today if white people categorically hadn't liked their work.

They spent damn near the whole movie making fun of American black culture, so... who the frick cares?

It kinda sucks that something like this would even come up.
Louie Anderson has had a good career and this makes him look like a charity case even though Arsenio and Eddie are probably friends with him

Louie Anderson likes to lock himself in hotel rooms, eat a bunch of filet o fish sandwiches, and shite everywhere.

Calling him the funniest white guy around is pretty high praise of him.

They aren't saying they didn't want him in it. They are saying they didn't plan on casting any white people but Paramount freaked out at the idea of a wide release movie not having one and made them cast a white person. Since they liked Anderson's work they hired him.
Not sure why people in this thread are taking this as a slight to Anderson. If I had been casting the movie I wouldn't really have thought to cast a white person either since it's set in Africa and 80s Harlem.

I understand that they misspoke, but that's all the more reason to be overly gracious in regards to talking about co-workers. As long as Anderson wasn't a jerk on set, you say "He is a lovely actor. And we're glad to have him on this movie." Avoid any whiff of negativity.

When its the other way around..You're supposed to add them in. Regardless.

I feel his pain. It's stupid to force actors of specific colors, or genders, or sexual orientations into roles just to check a box.

This is just as ridiculous as being forced to put black people in movies. If they wanted it to be all black, then it should've been. This forcing of races, sexes and LGs bullshite is out of hand

You "think"? Or you were?
I don't believe this happened at all. Sounds like they're just making it up to drum up attention.

Some of y’all need to chill. This story is funny as frick. And I think Louie thinks it’s funny too. I know it’s hard to tell tone from his tweet, but I think he’s feigning surprise and getting a good laugh about it.

Imagine in 30 years if some actor talks about how they were forced to put diversity in a movie today. That would totally go over well, lol.
Honestly I’m with Eddie on this one, make the movie you want to make without forcing shite into it.
