"Here's $110,000. You work out where you want to go..."

Aka the original "Do not get get attached to anything you cannot walk out on in 30 seconds flat"

Robert Prosky really fricked with the wrong dude...

Let's be honest: Tangerine Dream was ripping off "Comfortably Numb" for that finale music.

Edit: And that's not even a downside. It's a great score. Just wanted to confirm that that chord progression is exactly the same.

That was intentional. Mann wanted Comfortably Numb for the scene, but Pink Floyd wouldn't give him the rights, so he told Tangerine Dream to rip it off.

It's 90% the same but Comfortably Numb would have been even better with that Gilmour solo going through the scene.but it's still badass.

Can't believe they took this off HBO Max. Glad I watched again before that happened. Great movie.

A lot of the stuff in this film seems kind of cliche now, but I don't think a crime/heist film like this had ever really been made before Thief.

The heist details/authenticity and the gunplay and the brutal nature of the last Act would have probably been quite shocking in 1981.

This is a film that you could be remade today with virtually no alterations to the story (only update the heist technology and final shootout tactics) and it would still be a great film.

Mann did the same thing with his first ever movie - Jericho Mile. Watch the opening scene of that movie and note the remarkable similarity to a certain Rolling Stones song. He couldn't get the rights so he hired some musicians and told them to make it as close as they could without violating the copyright.

This movie is a whole damn VIBE

As much as I love Drive (2011) it owes A LOT to Thief

Love Comfortably Numb but I think Confrontation fits the scene better.

Gilmour's solo is one of my all time favorites but I think it is too smooth for all of the action going on, whereas Confrotation is a lot more rough and edgy and fits better with all of the gun play.

But that's just my opinion.

If we're being honest, Thief's ending is a cheat. In the classic crime genre, the protagonist always dies to avoid the ultimate glamorization of crime. The ending seemed like a studio push for a less downer of an ending. Forgiveable, though, since Frank is so captivating.

I don't recall him being in a good situation at the end. Weren't his life plans ruined?

He "disassembles" everything, yeah, only to walk into the night to some badass music. Nothing stopping him from putting things back together at that point. So, even figuratively, it's not really a death/loss.

The film explicitly conveys that everything he ever wanted, Caan finally had, but he had to destroy it in an instant because of lmchosen line of work. Not exactly a fun, uplifting end. Even though the finale was so cinematic.

Sure, he goes off into the night, but he's basically a penniless shell of a man at the end, with literally zero friends or family left.

Basically as close to a remake we are ever going to get. Big problem with Drive, however, is that I don't belive Gosling as a cold-blooded badass. With Jimmy Caan, I did.

Frank was obviously a former high level military go-fast guy who went down a not so ordinary career path after Vietnam.

Great Flick. Ending is a little ambiguous. Still think he was kinda shaky with the gun, but maybe that was intentional. Reluctant to use it, but knew he had to. Coulda used more Willie! I like the poster where he has the goggles(?) on.
