Ever seen what an IMAX movie looks like when it's sent to a theater?

here's the digital version. it look like there's 3 trailers associated with it. looks slightly bigger than a VHS tape.

image pulled from Reddit.

the OP says it's 450+ GB on an SSD.

another user says:

Oppenheimer unfortunately will only be a IMAX5 mix for everyone. I emailed IMAX just to double check and they said that is the only version. Dolby is also 5.1 with no ATMOS

Dune 2
Equalizer 3
Killers of the Flower Moon

Also, the 70mm roll is over 11 miles long...

I'm confused, is it projected from the 450GB SSD or from the 11 mile long film reel?

70mm is film, which is for the very few 70mm specific projection screens out there.

The IMAX HDD is digital, for IMAX theaters.

Right?

depends on the theater and their supported format.

YouTube video discusses the different formats.

here's a cheat sheet

just imagine the work that has to be done to splice that all together. I saw a pic of it being shipped in like 20 parts.

Wait, are we going full-circle here now and headed back to the more square viewing screens?

i don't know, but imax seems to have always been more "square".

i remember back when The Dark Knight Rises was out, everyone complained about the aspect ratios changing from scene to scene (IMAX full-screen changing to the black bars on the top and bottom).

Oppenheimer is the pinnacle of movies so we are trending towards that format, which I hate because we will have black bars again but just horizontally.

yeah, that's due to the difference in cameras from scene to scene. not every scene is shot with the IMAX camera. those scenes on small sets where people are talking wouldn't sound right. you'd hear the camera "ticking" in the background like a lawnmower.

the big/broad scenes where the original audio doesn't matter would be filmed with the IMAX cameras. Nolan filmed most of Tenet this way (IMAX cameras) instead of using the 65mm Panovision cameras. i guess that's why we couldn't hear most of it because it was shot with an IMAX camera.

i posted this video earlier in the thread. give it a look if you got the time.

Yeah, you are spot on. When The Dark Knight came out, it might have been his first movie using the Imax camera and he only used it for a handful of scenes (the bank robbery for example).

I feel like he might have used IMAX for the entirety of Dunkirk but I could be wrong.

70mm or it's length?

it's a 3 hour long movie.

this board screams/longs for "originality", and when they get it, they're "meh" on it.

I saw dunkirk at one and the flying/dogfight scenes were across the entire viewing area. The narrative scenes were not. It switched back and forth a good bit
