My only real beef is that the lighting is too dark, esoecially the carnival.

While “Nightmare Alley” wasn’t natively shot in black and white, the film was lit in such a way with certain values and “cross lighting” that it resembled a classic black and white noir, and when del Toro began watching dailies in black and white, he couldn’t look away.

‘Nightmare Alley’ Cinematographer Says Black and White Re-Release Is ‘Another Movie’
Special re-release of Guillermo del Toro’s film noir opens in select Los Angeles theaters on Friday

Though “Nightmare Alley” was just released little over a month ago, the film is already being re-released in select theaters in Los Angeles in a special black and white cut called “Nightmare Alley: Vision in Darkness and Light.” Curious cinephiles can now see Bradley Cooper’s face shrouded in shadow and Cate Blanchett lit up like a classic femme fatale all on 35mm film stock.
There are several more pictures from the B&W version at the bottom of the linked article.

for me (haven't seen the original; didn't know there was one) it draaaaaaaggged.
I predicted the ending as soon as I saw him at the homeless camp.
The shrinks office was stunning and I was surprised at her involvement with him overall, and at the end.
I vote this movie a turd.

This movie is boring as shite. I turned it off when he and his wife were making a plan for her to materialize.
Tell me how it ends.
Tell me how it ends.

Speculation involving spoilers below:
Cooper's motivation of self destruction is more than good enough to carry a shorter film. His progression moves through three acts in the film in which he:
Killed his alcoholic father (who had probably ignored Cooper's abuse to his mother's minister while consumed by alcohol)
Killed his foster Oedipal father with turpentine in the whiskey bottle (for denying his access to the book of tricks)
And then destroyed himself with alcohol (which Lilith correctly surmised to be the key to his downfall and induced him to drink much like the carnival con artists breaking in their next circus geek).
The movie also hints that Lilith was a prior victim of Grindle and that she therefore orchestrated both Cooper's spiraling self destruction in part to destroy Grindle without regard for the collateral damages that result.
I enjoyed it overall though

The old 1947 version is on YouTube. I couldn't believe how closely the two films were.
The B&W version of Del Toro's version looks spectacular. And the lighting is perfect for a 1940s Noir.
The biggest problem the new film has is that you can telegraph the entire ending after the first act. But whatever. Although is particulary care for the film, I'm just glad something like this actually hit made and had a real production behind it.
The set design and cinematography should win every award offered.

That’s actually a hallmark of a good script.
