Watched it again last night, upon many other times viewing, and hate him a little bit more every time I see his performance. He was absolutely perfect as Commodus.

Del Toro in Traffic won it in 2001. Did they snub Phoenix because Crowe won best actor?

Favoritism, maybe? It's a good question. I think he was superior to Del Toro's performance.

He was Commodus, not an actor playing him, if that makes sense. I went down a rabbit hole about the real Commodus and his portrayal was close to the historical vest.

Very deserving Oscar. Del Toro's storyline was the best part of that film.

Phoenix was just too much of an unknown at that point I think. The Crowe machine was also at full force during this time snd it overshadowed everyone else in the project.

After L.A. Confidential and The Insider, Crowe was one of the hottest names in the industry. Gladiator was his crown jewel.

The director wanted Phoenix to play Commodus from the minute the script was formed, and he crushed it.

No knock on Del Toro, who is incredible at what he does as well.

I like Del Toro, but he is a Christopher Walken. You are paying for the style more than the quality of the performance.

Good comparison. I like both of their styles I guess.

that's the answer. he wasn't Bradley Cooper, Leo, Daniel Day Lewis, (or even) Russell Crowe at the time. Pretty young in his career.

Hot take: Willem Dafoe should have won for Shadow of the Vampire that year.

Did you mean to say someone else? I had no idea who Cooper was until Wedding Crashers.

If y’all REALLY want to have some fun, watch Gladiator under the current political lense with Trump as Maximus and the Deep State as Commodus.

no i meant Bradley Cooper. i'm simply saying that some people later in their career can expect to get a nom for most any serious oscar bait movie.

Denzel isn't expecting a nomination for Equalizer 3, but he is for MacBeth, Fences, etc.

Bradley Cooper isn't expecting one for GotG3, but he is for Maestro, American Sniper, Nightmare Alley, A Star is Born, etc.

When Crowe was at his height with LA Confidential, Insider, Gladiator, Cinderella Man, Beautiful Mind, etc. you expected a Nomination for anything he did...

That being said Nice Guys is my favorite movie of his in the last 20 years.

Pheonix is in that arena when he does a movie, he probably expects a nomination more often than not.

Gotcha, point taken. To me it seems like the Oscar nods used to mean a little bit more back then in the 2000s and before, where it was awarded to someone perfecting their craft in movies I’ve heard of. Now I can hardly name nominations or the films.

No. Those 2 things had nothing to do with each other. If anything, Crowe won because he was "snubbed" the previous year for the much more deserving performance in The Insider. And really, "snubbed," is usually reserved for people who didn't get nominated, which Phoenix did. He was just in a stacked category that year, which Best Supporting Actor often is. These were the nominees that year:

Benicio del Toro – Traffic
Jeff Bridges – The Contender
Willem Dafoe – Shadow of the Vampire
Albert Finney – Erin Brockovich
Joaquin Phoenix – Gladiator

I think an argument could made for any of those, actually. Phoenix not winning is not some huge injustice. An interesting thing about these Oscars that you can see in those nominations. Soderbergh was a double nominee that year in both Directing and Best Picture with Traffic and Erin Brockovich. Directed Del Toro to a Best Supporting Actor and Julia Roberts to Best Actress in different movies. And followed this year up with Ocean's Eleven in '01. For fans of The Rewatchables, I'd have to think this was his "Apex Mountain." Pretty strong run from '98-'01 with:

Out of Sight--'98
The Limey--'99
Traffic--'00
Erin Brockovich--'00
Ocean's Eleven--'01

Possibly. The Oscars are pretty notorious for spreading awards around. Gotta figure a lot of the voters were picking Gladiator for best picture, Russell Crowe for best actor, Ridley Scott for best director, so they decided to give one to Traffic/Del Toro. It's very rare that a movie really runs the table.
