How famous was Jerry in Seinfeld?

On one hand, he seems to be making enough money to never have to do anything else for money.
Also, he dates women way out of his league if we are just going off looks and personality.
But on the other hand, there arent a lot of "Hey! Thats THE Jerry Seinfeld!" moments in the show.
He goes on the Today show, and the Tonight show and is able to pitch TV pilots etc. etc.
But the show doesnt really show him being famous. What says the M/TV board?

He's a big shot. He can afford to buy his dad a Cadillac.

Mildly famous comedian but had clout as a writer which let him get the pitch meetings.

This seems about right.

Remember it's New York, there are celebrities walkign around everywhere you turn. Just because he wasn't mobbed in the street doens't mean he wasn't doing well. You mentioned yourself that he was on the Today show and got a meeting with NBC to do his own show, that alone means he's bordering on the big time. There are also many instances of people being fans of his (the lady in the diner that wants the autograph, bubble boy, etc) so he does have somewhat of a following as well.

Think Louis C.K. when he first started getting some specials. Regionally he was pretty well known, got some talk shows and what not. Still known more for his writing than stand up.

He was at his pre-Sitcom fame.
Upper tier comic. Frequent guest on Letterman, steady guest on the Tonight Show.

in new york being a famous big shot is just routine and you dont rate fandom
only hollywood actors rate public attention and he is just a comedian

I don't recall anyone knowing Jerry due to his "fame."
My guess is that he was successful enough to stay booked in comedy clubs fairly regularly, especially around NYC, leading to his relationships with NBC and PBS. Makes sense that he may have been known for his writing in certain circles, as all of the comics knew him and seemingly looked up to him. He seemed very well-respected in the comic circles of NYC.

Jerry also didn't live that lavish. Didn't dress fancy, not a druggie or party guy.
He lived in the same building as an unemployed person and a mailman.
He ate most of his meals at a diner.
When he was at home, he ate cereal.

very true, he apparently lived very frugally. I'd have to think hard but off the top of my head I don't really recall him ever taking a proper "vacation" aside from visiting his parents in florida. Also think he had the same car the entire run.

The gay military guy at the coffee shop knew Jerry from the NY Post piece on Jerry being gay. Hahah

Kathy Griffin got a cable special (which he never got) based solely on bashing him.

Yeah I'm thinking CK before the "Everything is amazing and nobody's happy" bit on Conan blew him up. Not that famous to the public but big in the comedy club and touring scene. It's not perfect because he had already done Lucky Louie at that point but nobody watched it.

He was trying to buy a Saab from Puddy but I can’t remember if they closed the deal. Also he gave away a car to a homeless person in the BO episode. That apartment in NYC would be very expensive plus he paid a guy to move his car around from street to street during the day to avoid parking tickets. Only vacation I can remember was when he went to Hollywood to find Kramer.

Went to Florida early on with Elaine. They were supposed to go diving. Jerry went got black eyes, Elaine had back pain from couch and couldn't go.

They went to the Hamptons.

I imagine him being a "Mike Finoia" level comedian in the show.
He's done the Tonight Show and has writing credits.....would you recognize him if you saw him on the street though.

The Bubble Boy
was scanning through the thread to see if anyone else posted this
The Bubble Boy was a huge Jerry Seinfeld fan and I think his dad recognized him in the diner.
Also, if I remember correctly, he was famous enough where the diner in the bubble boy's home town wanted a signed photo to hang on the wall.
