If the IMAX 1.43:1 ratio were to ever be adopted by the TV companies, would you buy one?

we would've come full circle if that happens...

How much would they cost?

Anything with IMAX name on it would automatically have about a 200% markup.
They'd probably partner with some really high end TV manufacturer and charge $5000 for a 55" TV and you'd basically only bea able to watch Chris Nolan movies on it to get the actual full effect.
It would be a collosal waste of money.

I mean, I'm used to HD/4k/8k widescreen now, so no, not unless it became a pain not to.
I would maybe kit my cinema out for it, but that's a "down the line" decision.

As I understand it, movies were filmed in widescreen originally because it's more immersive within your field of vision.
In your example, the horizontal width appears to be the same, while the vertical has been stretched.
I can't really see a downside to this, since in effect you're just adding more information to the screen (hence we're seeing more of his face).
Now if you shrunk the screen to get that ratio, sure. But keeping the same width (periphery) and adding height seems pretty cool, IMO.

No doubt in my mind that they will attempt this and there will be quite a few people that will pick one up.

There would have to be more 1.43:1 content available. Zach Snyder's Justice League is the only thing I can think of available for at home viewing in that aspect ratio right now.
Nolan is basically the only director currently filming in that aspect ratio. So I don't see how this would ever be a thing.
There have been attempts at selling 2.35:1 aspect ratio TV's but they obviously never sold very well.

pretty much this. the problem with the old 4:3 tv's wasnt the shape, per se, it was the fact that virtually every movie had to be formatted into pan and scan which sucked.

What are you talking about? Pan and Scan was awesome.
Shite happening off screen often could add to a weak storyline and made you activate your imagination.
Who's saying this dialogue?

lol ok fair - it did add a dimension of unreality to scenes and movies that were otherwise mundane.

No.
That would be like going back to an old box-shaped TV. Who thinks that configuration is better?

GWTW was originally filmed in 1.37:1 (basically 16mm). If you ever catch it on TCM or have seen a screening of a copy of an original print, you get a quaint little box of a movie in the center of this big wide screen.
Later prints of the film (1960s and beyond) stretched it to fit on the wide screens that were common in theaters then, but it wasn't originally that way.
