The recent shite show of Rebel Moon got me thinking, does a truly original genre even exists at this point? Looking back at Lucas, who’s the “father” of the space opera, he even took inspiration from 1930s serials and Japanese films. But from here on, every “Space” movie is compared to Star Wars.

The gangster movie is self-explanatory, everything gets inspirations from real life or James Cagney movies.

Westerns - obvious

Adventure Fantasy, you could say Peter Jackson is the modern day inspiration but Dark Crystal, King Kong, etc all were before him.

Dramas, rom coms, thrillers, mystery, all have movies or novels dating back 100 years.

I could go on and on, my point is, is there a true genre that a filmmaker could invent these days? I feel like everything we watch has an “inspiration”

George Lucas to me feels like the last “Godfather” of a genre, even though he stole bits and pieces from other works.

Is there anything at all left to create or have we seen it all regards to “truly original creations”?

No but you can combine genres or do a new twist on a genre in an interesting way. Something like how Big Trouble in Little China mixes sci fi and Chinese martial arts in a modern American setting.

We've also had The Warrior's Way 2010 which mixed Chinese martial arts with The West.Red Sun was a Charles Bronson movie, I remember seeing as a kid, with Toshiro Mifune as a samurai bodyguard, who master is killed by Bronson's partner, played by Alain Delon. Ursula Andress and Capucine are also in it.

Feels like we've had quite a few a few Sci-Fi's in The West

Back to the Future Part III 1990
John Carter 2009
Cowboys & Aliens 2011
The Dark Tower 2017

Think you’ll see more subgenres, like body horror, mumblecore, etc waxing and waning in popularity throughout time because most everything can fit into the classic genres, which are very broad in nature.

Why would I tell you the next great idea?

Not trying to give someone else the next Harry Potter or Star Wars idea so they can make the billion dollars instead of me.

there were sci fi movies before george lucus.

You’ll get new period genres as history marches forward.

You don’t really need a new genre to make something new. I’m still waiting for a movie about the Bay Bridge series earthquake told from the point of view of Al Michaels played by Paul Giamatti.

I think business dramas are a newish genre of sorts.

Think Wall Street, the Social Network, Jobs, Margin Call, The Founder, etc.

I cannot think of movies prior to the 80s that are very similar to these, but someone with better film history knowledge may come in and own me on this take.

This genre has exploded post financial crisis.
