I’ve talked Star Wars with a lot of people and never heard “at at”, only A-T-A-T. This thread disturbs me

I'm taking sides with the A.T.-A.T. faction.
I've never heard the At-At pronunciation until my girlfriend said it.. and it's annoying.

As far as I know the name AT-AT has never been used on screen on walkers or imperial walkers.

Only the kiddos that play the video games use A-T-A-T.
quote:
They are also called "A-T-A-T"s briefly in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. In Star Wars: Battlefront II both terms are used. However, in Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, it is pronounced "A-T-A-T".
There is no other reference for that use on any Star Wars data base or official site.
And to be honest I have never heard it called either and any SW fans I talk to like me, only ever referenced them as walkers. But they are listed on all the the sites as AT-AT.
There is one quote I found from SW Legends regarding them.
quote:
"We had Battle of Gormen won, until the AT-ATs arrived. They came out of the fog and ripped apart the front lines. The locals ran in terror, but the experienced surrendered. We knew that you can't outrun an AT-AT." ?Major Bren Derlin, Rebel Alliance field commander

The OG Box it came in says otherwise.

Some posters here are probably just too young to remember the "At At" toys of the early 80's.
This toy commercial should be the final answer to the discussion: YouTube: 1981 Kenner At-At Walker toy commercial
I'm a little young for that one myself, but I remember some kids having awesome toy collections and we always called them At At walkers. As in @ @ Walkers.

It also says: Armoured.
Therefore, an inferior version of the toys marketed to smelly eurotrash.
This piece of evidence should be discarded.

Interesting as I slightly remember the commercial but not what it said. I always wanted one and my kids have several now.

I also may have misunderstood the OP. I think the confusion is it is written everywhere as AT-AT so some do pronounce it that way but if in general I call them walkers but when chatting with my kids to describe them we do reference by each letter.
I believe these were all the ones used on the screen so far.
In film and television Utilized by the Republic, Empire and First Order
All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) walker first introduced in The Empire Strikes Back (as the Galactic Empire's main units against Rebel Alliance infantry during the Battle of Hoth) and also appears in Return of the Jedi (as the vehicle used to transport Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to their shuttle on the forest moon of Endor)
All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST) is a two-legged mech walker introduced briefly in The Empire Strikes Back and featured extensively in Return of the Jedi. An AT-ST also appears briefly in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, patrolling Jedha City following an attack by Saw Gerrera's forces. A modified AT-ST later appears in The Mandalorian under the possession of a group of raiders, as the Empire has ceased to exist by the time of the series. An updated model of the AT-ST is used by the First Order in The Last Jedi. Shortly before the film's climax, an AT-ST is commandeered by BB-8
All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, or AT-TE walker, is a mechanized infantry combat vehicle used by the Grand Army of the Republic ground forces. Having six grappling legs and a low centre of gravity, this armoured walker could navigate any terrain – even climbing vertical cliffs. It appears in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars multimedia campaign, Star Wars Battlefront II and in the early episodes from the second season of Star Wars Rebels.
All Terrain MegaCaliber Six (AT-M6), also known as the Gorilla Walker or First Order Heavy Assault Walker,[3] was a mobile heavy artillery walker used by the First Order during their war with the Resistance.
All Terrain Attack Pod (AT-AP): Featured in Revenge of the Sith and Clone Wars media, Nicknamed the "sniper tank",
All Terrain Open Transport (AT-OT): Introduced in Revenge of the Sith and other sources,it was called the "Clone CAT walker".
All Terrain Recon Transports (AT-RT): Introduced in Revenge of the Sith operated by clone troopers searching for Yoda (Frank Oz) on Kashyyyk. A scene cut from Revenge of the Sith would have shown Yoda distracting clone troopers while Chewbacca removes them from their AT-RT in a manner similar to how he obtains control of an AT-ST in Return of the Jedi.
All Terrain Defense Pod (AT-DP): Introduced in Star Wars Rebels
All Terrain Mobile Artillery (AT-MA): Introduced in The Force Awakens, the AT-MA is a model of quadruped base defense walker used by the First Order to defended Starkiller Base.
All Terrain Armoured Cargo Transport (AT-ACT): Introduced in Rogue One
All Terrain Heavy Hauler (AT-HH): Featured in The Last Jedi
All Terrain Heavy Scout (AT-HS): A model of walker fielded by the First Order. The LEGO version
Being ex-military using letters is just instinct for me.

Name aside, can we talk about how shitty the design is from a functionality standpoint? This is a civilization that has mastered FTL travel, cloning armies, and light sabers, and you meant to tell me they use a four-legged, top-heavy hunk of galvanized steel to traverse an open battlefield? Come on. And Luke was really the first one to realize you could throw essentially a giant bola at their legs and render them useless?
Team A-T-A-T, btw.

Yup it is A-T-A-T.
Why would you call it At-At. Why would THEY call it At-At when so many other AT- Walkers already existed and were pronounced with each individual letter. Like A-T-T-E
And Im adding praise: AT-TE is the best, most practical, and most balanced combat walker design in Star Wars. 4 forward turrets. 2 rear turrets. Mass driver cannon. Vacuum sealed cabin allowing use in space. The magnetic/grappling ability within the feet to allow steep climbing and latching onto surfaces. Ability to be picked up and dropped off quickly by an LAAT/C. Empire shouldve kept this design going.

I don't know if it's because of that commercial but as a kid I've always called them AT AT's not pronouncing each letter.

Only Star Wars toy I ever owned as a kid in the early 80s.
It was the most advanced toy they offered.
Everyone on the playground called it an AT-AT.

It was marketed as such. No one even knew what it stood for unless you bought the toy...but no one was going to say, hey I just got an All Terrain Armored Transport.
If you want to nerd out, EBay sells them as AT-ATs, Imperial Walkers.
And linguistically it wouldn't make sense to separate All-Terrain and Armored-Transport as if they were stand alones individual words and not a combined noun or adjective...MREs aren't M-R-E.
But nice nerdy post. Let it go man.

The fricking commercial calls it an AT-AT.

The “At-At” and “At-St” were designed by someone that hasn’t spent much time in snow. Why the hell would you give a machine legs to traverse the snow?
Actually why not just use a space ship or cruiser of some sort. The AT-AT were not practical. They were slow and their cannons were slow to turn and didn't make since. Lucas should have hired some ex military to help design his flawed machines. Those things would never have been made in real life. They are just for aesthetics.

You kidding? The US military alone has rubber stamped many impractical and cumbersome vehicles. Plenty of other nations have done the same.

It is pronounced both ways in canon and Lucasfilm has proclaimed At-At in the past.
It is a piece of military equipment used primarily by one side and the idea it has one pronunciation across an entire galaxy seems a little overzealous. One may be technically correct and used by Imperial supply officers but just like the HMMWV became the Humvee it is not surprising the A T A T became the At-At since the former is a mouthful.

How you spell something is not the same as how you pronounce it. MRE is still pronounced as M R E no matter how you spell it.
I also have not shopped on EBay in a while do they now have sound pronouncing the item you want to buy?

That’s bc acronyms are, by definition, pronounced as words. That’s what differentiates acronyms from initialisms.
SCUBA = acronym
FBI = initialism.
