James Franco winking gif from Spiderman 3 and tricks of camera depth

James Franco turns his head, winks and looks slick as hell. Or does he? That's according to the camera.
His head turned creates depth: the left eye is closer to us than the right. He has a crooked smile bent toward the left side of his face closest toward us. And the centering of the shot. This makes you focus only on his left eye.
So you notice by now and maybe you did before that he doesn't wink and the right eye closes too. But it still looks slick.
You can make yourself focus only on the right eye, maybe zoom in. Then it doesn't look slick anymore. He looks like a doofus. You see the reality of the situation:

What does this remind me of? Oh yeah..

It's an optical illusion. But you still think this is a reach. You say his right eye still closes a split second later, so while not perfect he does do it "after" the wink. But this is an illusion too.
The gif at the top is 13 frames. Frames 7-11:

In real life, James Franco is not good at winking.

I think about this all the time

I wink. It could have been me.

Another example.
No CGI was used in the classroom scenes from elf, just camera angles and set placement.

The elf one is cool. The wink, not so much.

I've always thought it was dumb that he doesn't wink but actually closes both eyes. But now with this in-depth analysis, I am more confident than ever in my original assessment.

This Elf example is incredible. Same tactic a lot of baws use to make their fish look bigger in post-catch pics

I'm more shocked that Will Ferrell wasn't wearing actual stockings but leggings instead.

Why does this look like its from Freaks and Geeks? Also, wtf.

We see this left eye muscles contract in the 'winking' manner, so we focus on that more and while he does suck at winking, he does kinda wink with his left eye briefly, right after his right eye opens again.
Technically it's a wink. But one only a 6 yr old could be proud of doing.

Some people can't wink.. so this is probably just the best he could do

quote:Yes and the twitch also reinforces your focus there, I failed to mention that. I included the frames after for full sake of fairness. For one frame he pulls off something resembling a wink AFTER closing both his eyes. I think it's more like a pirate having a stroke but credit where it's due.
