Not the greatest war film but Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx are fantastic in this film.

Remember the trailer & the music for this movie as it came out about the same time as Serenity. Big Firefly fan, so it was a thing.
Never saw this one though.

Took me YEARS to watch this all the way through. After I finally had finished it I was pretty disappointed. I don’t remember much about it now but I remember it being boring as frick and just not really very good at all.
Am I misremembering?

IDK, but it seems like there was a flurry of (mostly anti-war) movies out of Hollywood, all Middle East themed, so my interest wasn't all that high. If it was good, maybe I'd have given it a chance, but I never heard any buzz, so I didn't bother.

If you're looking for a rah-rah frick yeah Marines killing everything on sight film then yes it would be absolutely boring.

IMO despite some warts, it somehow gets it together and makes a good, possibly great watch.
The cinematography depicting some of the oddest moments of modern times was a gift.

It's based on this & pretty good if you haven't read it.

I wasn’t looking for that at all really. Just wanted a good movie that entertained me. And IIRC, it didn’t at all.

It has a couple of good scenes that are funny af but overall, from what I’ve heard it captures the boringness of the Gulf War pretty good.
Majority of those guys didn’t do shite because it was over so fast

I like it, but I’ll take Three Kings over Jarhead.

I actually love this movie. I think it captures how most of the military is young idiot men acting like young idiot men pretty well. The scene with the reporter kills me everytime.

20 years just like that. Damn
Other than that yes definitely a good one.

I talked to someone who fought in the Gulf War and said it was a pretty accurate depiction of what went down

Sort of like military service, no?

Great movie reminded me of Three Kings. The trumpet scene w/ Fox and Gyllenhaal was hilarious.

i was in the officer candidate pool at A&M when this movie came out, and i remember the OSO (recruiter) sent out an all-hands email basically cautioning us about this movie. i guess the concern was that it didnt paint the Marine Corps in a great light. i thought it was a pretty decent flick though, and now, with hindsight, i think it probably captures the junior enlisted experience in training and a war zone pretty well. i really liked Chris Cooper's appearance as the battalion commander and the moto-speech he gives.
one major annoyance - the heavy-handed scene burning the desert cammies at the end along with the line "we're not gonna need these anymore" was so obnoxiously on the nose in a 2005 film.
i thought Jamie Foxx stole the show - played a Marine SNCO beautifully.

You aren’t.
It is the Seinfeld of war movies… it is about the experience of being trained and deployed for a war where you do absolutely nothing of what would normally be considered part of a war.
Main part I consider memorable is The Deer Hunter being screened for the troops.
