Jim Carrey SNL from 1996 is a top 5 Episode Ever

Basically every sketch was a home run.
-Carrey was at the peak of his Hollywood powers. Just came off a two year run of Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and was about to release The Cable Guy. His stock was never higher and he was never more famous. He was famously tagged the $20 million man. After Cable Guy he began chasing Oscars.
-Roxbury Guys were invented
-Norm was in his Weekend Update prime as the greatest anchor and with the greatest material in the history of the show. OJ acquittal was still new and Clinton was running for re-election.
-"new" cast of Will Ferrell and Co.
-Carrey being a seasoned sketch performer hit every note. Even the "bad" sketches at the end of the episode hit... Ride the Snake...
-Rock n Roll still lived. .. Soundgarden as the musical guest.
-entire episode is infantly re-watchable.
-It was the 90's...the world had yet to go completely mad, there was an innocence to the show which simply does not exist anymore. Even the political skits weren't too vicious. They made clear Dole's presidential chances, but weren't mean spirited. Norm has since said he greatly admired Bob Dole and loved playing him. He was a war hero who didn't deserve harsh disrespect personally.

NBC aired this episode last season in the 9pm slot. Definitely funny. Also great to hear Soundgarden perform "Burden in my Hand" and "Pretty Noose".

Makes sense but realizing Will was on that show over 20 years ago makes me feel old as hell.

Recorded this on VHS when it aired. I watched it a countless number of times.

Norm MacDonald is the GOAT SNL News anchor and it isn't even close.

So I'm not the only one who use to tape SNL episodes as a kid/teenager? I've always said the early 90s cast of Hartman, Farley, Carvey, Myers, Sandler, Spade, etc was the best..and still think it was, but that mid-late 90s run from about 96-99 probably produced more great full episodes than any cast ever.
This Carrey show is a prime example. This cast didn't produce as many mega-stars (Ferrell being basically the only one), but I think the writing was better and the cast played off of each other much, much better...plus you have the Norm factor.
I can think of multiple A+ episodes from this time period where nearly every sketch hit...even when the host wasn't a great actor, it worked.
The first Britney Spears episode was great, the first Pamela Anderson episode was great, the Derek Jeter episode was great...and on and on. And when they did get a great host a la Carrey or Walken etc...the episodes are almost all classics.......damn I miss good Saturday Night Live.

This is still one of my favorite sketches ever. Sometimes when people post diet/weightloss threads I reply "ride the snake'' but never know if anyone else gets it.

Amazing line up! Now I want to go back and watch that season, only thing missing was HD. To me, the run from 89-99 was amazing SNL. Also the last time i really watched it every weekend.

All of this and that cast on SNL was 21 fricking years ago?
Comedy has been dead for a while.

I remember watching this episode and can remember the "go sonics" on the drums
If i remember it 20 years later it must've been good

One of the GOAT skits.
Agree that this episode is one of the greats. Almost everything in it was hilarious.

Read through Norm's Update that week, and every joke was a winner: LINK
