It will focus on his rise to power, both on the battlefield and in politics, while he courts his future wife - Josephine (to be played by The Crown's Vanessa Kirby). Shooting begins in Europe at the end of this month.

All you need to do is watch Gladiator to see how well he plays power hungry people

I'd even say he's a considerably better actor now. He seems to get better and more diverse with everything he does

Wasn't HBO supposed to make his version of Napoleon a few years ago?

Seems a bit old to play Napoleon at this phase of his life.

This started filming today. I’m on location and it’s an impressively large production. Looks like they’re doing this one right with no expense spared.

I like Phoenix and think his resemblance to Napoleon combined with his acting skill make him great for the role - but it would have been better 15 years ago when his age coincided with Bonaparte's prime.

Napoleon was legit 5-foot-2, Phoenix is 5-8. Some creative shooting angles and a touch of CGI should be able to compensate.

After all Tom Cruise (5-7) has been sold to his fans as 6-0 for decades.

Wasn't that just a bit below average for the time period, though? So, surround him with people around 6' and it should look about right.

Is Ridley Scott using Kubrick's notes?

He was 5’6”, typical Frenchman, average height of most people in Louisiana.
