John Adams HBO Miniseries

Finished up this miniseries from 2008 today. Really good show, I think it’s definitely worth a watch if you get the chance. It really gives an interesting look into the early days of America as a period authentic piece. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney really stand out as John and Abigail Adams but the whole show is really well-cast and well-acted. John Adams may not be the most well-liked founding father but this show gives a really good look into his life and the people he spent it with. I highly recommend it for fans of early American history. Has anyone here seen it and what did you think if you have?

Of every they're were a tune to embody freedom, this is it: LINK
Probably not a more prescient series than during these current times. They Live is also way up there right now.

Fantastic series.
So many things I loved about it to mention w/o writing a novel, but I especially enjoyed all of the Adams/Jefferson interactions, and any time the charismatic Franklin or the statuesque Washington were on-screen.
I will say I learned things, like Adams' honorable defense of the Brit soldiers despite the angry mob, how brutal tarring/feathering actually was when the (familiar) peaceful protests turned violent, and how some states in congress initially exercising their right to say no to risking the money, resources & lives of their constituents for seemingly low odds at independence (though they eventually came around, still, it was a pro-states rights move, back when they existed, pre-bloated Fed government). Also, I didn't realize how integral Samuel Adams was to the revolution.

It’s not on the same level as the John Adams miniseries, but Sons of Liberty focuses on Sam Adams and is one of my favorites.

I liked it. What his daughter went through was sad and I didnt know he lost a son. Thought it was pretty accurate. The series is based from the book. If you liked the series, you would like the book.

When I was in high school we watched the one where Mr Feeney played John Adams in a musical. 1776?

That explains much.
No, THIS version must be shown.
I've thought that from the first time I watched it. Truly epic series.

It’s a great series and the book is fantastic too.
I feel like John Adams gets overlooked as a founding father, everyone looks at Jefferson, Franklin, and Washington as these larger than life freedom fighters and Adams is an old curmudgeon who thought the American people were stupid and wanted a huge government.
That’s not fair, he was one of the most competent and intelligent of all the founding fathers, he’s responsible for Jefferson getting the opportunity to write the Declaration and had a huge role in its contents. Franklin gets all the credit for France joining the war but Adams helped in that too.
History has always made he and Hamilton out to be these big government obsessed lawyers, Hamilton of course is now loved because of his musical, maybe Adams reputation can find something like that

Mainly, because I learned from the series that Adams met face-to-face with King George, it actually made me laugh out loud when I finally watched the musical Hamilton when King George sings about Adams taking over the Presidency and having to follow the large presence of Washington.
"John Adams?
I know him
That can't be
That's that little guy who spoke to me
All those years ago
What was it, `85?
That poor man, they're gonna eat him alive!"
I couldn't help but visualize the diminutive & round Paul Giamatti looking miffed.

I agree this should be required viewing in school. It's extremely well done. I didn't realize how much of a freak Ben Franklin was. He was a dirty boy.

According to Lin Manuel... that is the exact image he was referencing when he wrote that line.... will try to find a link but a year or so a go I went on a google deep dive to read all about the stories behind the music and he drew inspiration from that series and the west wing. So you went right where he wanted you to go when you thought of that!

This guy should be banned - no spoilers!

Agreed. I watch it in 2 days at least once a year. My favorite parts are his time in France, the continental congress, and the meeting with King George

This is a great series... Giamatti’s court room scene was just magnificent. Perfect actor for the role.
Also if you like this series, you should really watch Grant, it’s even better IMO
