It had a strong supporting cast. Plus a another level of recurring characters played by strong actors (Lisa Kudrow, Hank Azaria, Jeff Garlin, Carol Burnett, Cyndi Lauper...)

I avoided it like the plague because of Paul Reiser. I don't care for any of the comedians that made their living off of being neurotic(David Brenner, Richard Lewis, Woody Allen, Reiser, etc).

There was just something about the characters that were so annoying.

This is it in a nutshell. The characters were just not very likable. Wildly imperfect characters can work (as in Seinfeld), but both main characters in this series were just kinda aggravating.

I casually watched the show as a youngster because I had a crush on Jamie. I stopped watching after the baby.

I loved watching this show when I was a kid. I think that I really liked Helen Hunt for some reason. It was one of my favorite shows. Weird.

Same here. The neurotic Jewish comedian schtick is/was over done. I don't think Paul Reiser is funny, and as others have said, Helen Hunt is just unlikeable.

I really liked the show, but they end up divorced. What was that?

Your impression and instinct as a kid was excellent.

Thirtysomething: A depressing show about two depressed couples (along with its "misery-loves-company" audience) -- ALL desperately needing happy-pills and Jack Daniels therapy.

And for that reason (and the pretentiousness of the characters and "humor") I could never understand how anyone enjoyed the show.

at the ending he Seinfeld ending of the episode where Susan holds George hostage in watching Mad About You instead of with Jerry to the movies.

Woody Allen launched that whole neurotic Jewish guy /NYC comedy scene genre and TV show lineups that took off during the 80s AND 90s.
