Well earned retirement. Fantastic actor. Enjoy your remaining years in peace.

Oscar-winning actor Michael Caine has announced that his role as an author in the new film Best Sellers will mark his final acting role. “It has turned out to be what is my last part,” Caine said in an interview with the BBC. He attributed his retirement to health conditions, saying a spine condition prevents him from walking freely and, frankly, he’s older. “I’m 88,” he said. “There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man at 88.” Caine said the lack of work in the last two years, which he partly attributes to the COVID-19 pandemic, has allowed him to devote more time to writing books. Writing allows him to substitute a 6 a.m. call time for some penmanship from bed, he said. “I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer, which is lovely,” he said.

All you need to know is that a guy with his talent can't get work anymore. Yes, he's 88, but he's also still a top notch actor and elevates any project he's in. He's one of the last true greats from the old days.
Caine's greatest line was when he won the Oscar (finally) for Cider House Rules. In the presser he said:
"I've made a lot of crap... But I've also made alot of money."

When I hear of Michael Caine, I always think of the story when his mother was on her deathbed at the hospital, and he went to visit her.
Another person also arrived and told Michael he was her son. Mom had never told Michael she had another kid. She kept it a secret into her 90’s!

I recommend to anyone interested in watching really outstanding, yet unserious, acting to watch a film called California Suite.
The film is fantastic in its own right, but the real standouts are Sir Michael and Dame Maggie in their scenes. A real clinic in 2-person acting. It was a Neil Simon script and there was tons of great dialogue, and Herbert Ross deserves some credit for his direction. Dame Maggie won an Oscar for portraying an actress who loses the Oscar (which is Hollywood and Meta as frick), and at the very least Sir Michael deserves an assist as their entire screen time was together in dialogue.

Many of us would be lucky just to make it to 88.

He'll always be the guy from "Blame It On Rio" for me.

One of my favorite Michael Caine quotes was when someone asked him about being in the truly horrific Jaws: The Revenge. He said “I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

One of my favorite Michael Caine stories is when he was the understudy of none other than Peter O’Toole for a play in London. They went out to dinner and black out. They then wake up in an unfamiliar apartment where Michael asks Peter what time was it. And Peter’s reply, “Nevermind what time is it. What fricking day is it?” They woke up at 5:00 PM two days later and curtains come up at 8:00 PM. The restaurant apparently banned both Peter and Michael for life from the restaurant.

One of his most underrated flicks.

Ebert's review:
quote:
Caine is a splendid movie actor, a consummate professional who is fun to watch in any film, because there is always a layer of irony and fun right there below the surface. That makes him especially entertaining as a villain; his charm makes his sins seem permissible, or at least understandable. He rarely plays villains we hate. More often, we want him to get away with his sins.

Playing The Weatherman’s father is an underrated performance.
