The film generally got steamrolled in 2007 because it's probably the best year for movies in 20 years, but the screenplay Oscar was wide open. No Country and There Will Be Blood were both in the adapted category

So, who beats Michael Clayton, one of the best written films you'll ever see....why Juno of course.

That fast talking pregnant babe was loads better of course.

Michael Clayton is also Clooney's best work and the entire cast is phenomenal, The dialogue and story structure, though, are next level great.

I've sung Michael Clayton's praises on here several times, it blew me away the first time I watched it; but you are seriously underrating Juno here.

Michael Clayton is a thriller with a script that builds tension.

Juno is a coming of age drama with a script that builds character.

Given that the latter was an independent film that became an omnipresent cultural sensation on the back of its character and dialogue, it would take a lot to convince me that it wasn't a special screenplay.

It won the BAFTA and WGA original screenplay awards as well.

Juno is a theatrical version of a crappy MTV show.

If a movie was made saterizing Indies, Juno would be the main story like She's All That was in Not Another Teen movie.

Michael Clayton was sophisticated and intense.

Juno was a pandering blob to the worst contrivances of Indie films that insulted the audience.

on the same token, MC is overrated b/c George Clooney plays a total loser and since it wasn't his type, people were shocked

i think that shock (and some great performances by tilda and tom wilkinson in particular) created a way for people to ignore some really second-rate stuff (like the corporate assassins that were hokey as f)

now is the movie/screenplay better than Juno? in retrospect, yes. but i don't get the high placement of this movie b/c of its big flaws (that aren't just one-offs. they play an important part of the plot of the movie)

I enjoy the hell out of Michael Clayton. I find it to be a great story and is highly rewatchable. That is good enough for me.

This is why I give the edge to Juno for screenplay. MC is made by Tilda Swindon and Tom Wilkinson more than anything.

Lars and the Real Girl, nominated in the same category that year, was worse.

And Juno wasn't a blob; it was a very tightly honed and crafted set of Indie tropes. Its screenplay was almost visible, which made it easy to vote for. People loved and still love this movie. I don't, but OP trying to pretend it's pregnancy storyline has any less value than a paint-by-numbers legal thriller plot dressed up in a pretty structure is silly.

Juno
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
Ratatouille
The Savages

I think The Savages is more emotionally honest and resonant than the other 2 indie movies, but it's much less "writerly" than Juno. Ratatouille is the only movie in this bunch that I'd call truly special.

Sucks that it ran into the buzzsaw that was No country/Blood that year..

What? Probably Gosling's best performance especially considering the storyline. Michael Clayton is George Clooney playing himself, vocal fry and somewhat charismatic. Great screen presence, not great acting

I don't think playing the best fixer at one of the biggest and most prestigious law firms in the world is a "loser" type character.

Yes, he had some bad beats and has some demons, but loser?? Loser by the literal sense... That he loses at cards snd business deals, yes, but loser as in the guy who is 45 and stocking shelves at Costco?? No.
