Mindhunter executive producer David Fincher confirms in an interview that the Netflix show will not return for season 3 due to financial concerns.

David Fincher has confirmed that Mindhunter season 3 will not happen. Set in the late 1970s, Mindhunter focuses on two fictionalized FBI agents who attempt to understand and catch serial killers by looking into their psychological state, ultimately beginning what would be known as criminal profiling. Season 2 premiered in August 2019, but the long hiatus led to speculations about any chances for a potential season 3.

Mindhunter is one of Netflix's most highly-rated shows, holding a 96 percent critical rating for season 1, while season 2 delivers a near-perfect 99 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, it seems the subpar viewership led to the Mindhunter's cancellation on Netflix, and production design and attention to detail to set up the period aesthetic likely added to the high expense that didn't see much return. This update means that Mindhunter joins a growing number of cancelled Netflix shows.

This was one of the best things going.

Probably "too good" for modern audiences.

This is just odd. I first thought that the general public just doesn't want to watch something so dark but Dahmer is no. 4 on Netflix's most popular series. People have crap taste.

Netflix is dead in the water once Stranger Things and Cobra Kai finish next season.

Which is one of the many ways it set it apart from other shows.

I feel like Netflix had numerous Netflix Series offerings at one point with unique creative/artistic direction, and they’ve slowly just homogenized their “original content,” and many shows now have a very similar look & feeling…much like network tv. Whenever they implement the no password sharing I’ll let my subscription go. I think I’ve been a subscriber since about 2005 or so.

It will be interesting to see the numbers for next year. They have killed off many of the good series.

Remember when Netflix bragged about making sure their shows had proper endings and encouraged you to share your account w/family members?

At least we know how the story ends since it is based on actual serial killers.

I wont even start a new Netflix series that someone recommends these days. If it makes a long or full run I will binge it one day but I'm not investing my time in a series that's most likely going to get cancelled as soon as it gets off the ground. These aren't sitcoms where we just watch for the cheap laughs and goofy hijinks on the same sound stage every week. These shows have a story arc and character development.

Normal network television works on ads and ratings. Netflix works with subs. If they don't feel a show will bring new subs, they cut it. Disney has insulation from this because of their many product tie-ins.

i think there is more to it .... It's not that expensive of a show with affordable leads and they shoot in Pittsburgh. A credit state with way less costly crews than L.A.

My understanding is DF would rather focus his time on making films. And I have a hard time believing Netflix would tell him no on anything.

It got Rome'd, which is a bummer. It was a fantastic show.

I also imagine it didn't help that Fincher wanted to work on other projects and the cast they had on the show are all actors/actresses that are generally sought after for other productions (on screen and elsewhere, especially in Groff's case).
