Watching it again for the first time in years.
Wow, Kurt Russell killed the role as coach Herb Brooks, what a performance.
Awesome depiction of the greatest sporting upset in history.
Boards thoughts on this movie?

Definitely one of the better sports films to come out this century.

Probably my favorite sports movie of all time.

Fun fact: Same director as Warrior and The Way Back, both of which are some of the best "sports" movies of the last decade or so.
Kurt Russell should have been nominated for an Oscar for the locker room speech alone...which was apparently almost verbatim from Brooks real words (minus a bunch of f-bombs).

I actually think it's underrated among the best non-comedic sports films.
I remember when it came out, some of the players from the 1980 team said Kurt Russell nailed Brooks' mannerisms and way of speaking. It's probably my favorite role of his.

One of my fav movies of any genre. Also probably one of the only true sports movies in that the whole film revolves around events tied into the game itself and not a lot of subplots and side stories with the game being more the main backdrop.

The movie makes me want to run through a brick wall.

Brooks, in real life, had a better speech before the Gold medal game against the Czechs. Players said he came in and only said, "If you lose this game, you'll take it to your graves. Your fricking graves."

One of my favorite sports movies. When they have to do skate suicides after losing that exhibition game and Eruzione figures out what Herb means when he asks. "Who do you play for?", it is epic.

Love this film. A few of the actors are relatives of the original Team USA.

Another fun fact. Hockey is really hard to fake since you can either skate well or you can’t, so most of these guys weren’t actors.
One was a guy I knew in college who played hockey at the U of Minnesota

Disney would not make this movie today because of the underrepresentation of minorities.
If they did make it, at least two of the players would be gay (and one possibly trans).

if you're gonna be pedantic, that also wasn't the "gold medal game"
soviets ended up with silver

Lol
Not pointing out the round robin format in place at the time is a little different than misidentifying the opponent, but point taken.

This and Moneyball are my two favorite sports movies. Without that performance of Herb, though, this movie sinks. Russell was absolutely incredible and even more incredulous is that he wasn’t at least nominated for Best Actor.
