LINK he’s probably right.
quote:

“I remember us watching it for the first time, and all of us looked at each other,” star Denise Richards said during today’s Starship Troopers panel at C2E2. “We were all like, ‘We didn’t know this was a fricking comedy.'”

quote:

Ironside cleared up any confusion about the movie’s tone. “Doogie Hauser sticks his hand up the bug’s arse, turns to everybody, and says, ‘It’s in pain. It’s frightened,’ and everybody cheers.”

The bugs were presented unambiguously as monsters who were slaughtering humans, including characters we were attached to, of course the audience wanted them dead

If he wanted the satire to be a little bit more perceptible he should have had stronger allusions to the idea that maybe the asteroid attack was a false flag.

It’s absurd that anybody would believe the bugs could send an asteroid across the galaxy with their plasma farts

I think it was a false flag operation in the movie, which would have worked with the anti-war satire. But the books version was a little different:
quote:

The Terran Federation and Pseudo-Arachnids were already facing off for a long time in the outer worlds. Bugs, using information provided by the Skinnies, had located the location of Earth, the capital of the Terran Federation. That was how, a fleet of bugs with their ships, personally and directly, down, attacked and destroyed the city of Buenos Aires, turning it into a heap of rubble. So, after several battles, it was decided to invade Klendathu and begin the Bug War.

don’t make your anti-war movie where joining the army looks tight. Avenging your family getting nuked, Banging smokes and killing bugs, sign me up.

the director didn’t even read the book before he decided how to write it. Book details/motivations are irrelevant

I knew the movie was a satire when I saw it again as a teenager, I didn’t really get it when my brother snuck me in at 9. It’s pretty on the nose

quote:

Well, it’s fascism versus communism.’ Well, who’s who? he said, ‘We’re the bad guys. Humans aren’t always the good guys.'”

I’ll forgive anyone that choose fascism with nice tits over communist, bugs or Russian

I remember being excited for this movie then once I saw it I hated it. Haven't watched it again since.

The satire in ST is pretty on the nose, so I’m not sure what Verhoeven is talking about.

This movie was right up my alley in college when it came out. Skipped class with a buddy of mine to go watch it one day. And we liked it so much we skipped class the next day to watch it again.

When I see a movie coming up that I want to watch I dont watch any trailers or commercials for it so when I finally saw it I was expecting something different.

I was older when I first saw it and it was clear the Earthlings were meant to be some type of fascist. The whole you can’t vote unless you serve and all the military propaganda ads. Verhoeven slapped you across the face with it.

The problem is he made a damn fun movie with some very attractive women in it. It was super quotable and pretty goofy. His message got lost in the fun, no one cared about it, they just wanted to enjoy the action and booby slop he fed them.

This is discussed all the time in length on X and never goes anywhere. PV is a moron who didn’t understand the material he was using. It’s basically “I liked the fascist aesthetic for humans so that makes them fascist I guess” for him. He’s a dufus.

Yeah the guy who spent most of his successful career creating incisive-yet-broadly-entertaining satires about the rise of fascism is totally a doofus because he didn't interpret Heinlein the exact same way as some bros on X.
