Payback - Director's Cut

Always loved Payback. The gritty environment. No one is truly a "good guy" in the classic sense, just some are much less shitty than others. Mel being Mel and kicking arse with a quip on his tongue. Lucy Liu as a hot dominatrix.
What's not to like?
Until...
I got it on Blu-ray (big proponent of owning physical media) and it came with the Director's Cut. Watched that last night and HOLY shite!!!!
Entirely different 3rd Act, new open and some additions to the first two acts (including an extended scene with Porter and his wife). Much different tone with this one (much darker [even though a lot of the "bluing" from the original had been removed]) and while still having humor, it's toned down some. All the same, it was damned good.
Anyway, I may be late to this party, but in case there are others out there, definitely worth the watch.

Yeah, I loved the original but wasn't as big a fan of the DC. The simplicity and humor in the theater release is what made it for me.

Love this movie! Never saw the director's cut so may have to check it out upon your recommendation.

Always has been one of my most underrated movies of the last 30 years. Such a fun movie

The book it's based on is called The Hunter by Richard Stark. I love this series of books and have probably read about 15 of them. The first movie version of the book is called Point Blank and stars Lee Marvin w/ John Boorman directing. It is very stylized and has that 70's noir feel. Definitely worth checking out. The next is Payback that you mentioned w/ Mel Gibson. It is the truest to the novel, but there was never any humor in the novel and Parker/Porter is more of a machine than a wise cracking smart arse. Jason Stratham played the title character Parker in a movie with that name that was based on a later novel. I would love to see someone like Tarantino adapt one of the other books like The Jugger. Right up his alley. The Parker books in order.

I prefer the theatrical release version of the movie.
The theatrical versions plot is this:
Porter (Gibson) is betrayed by his partner Val and is ripped off for 70,000 dollars. Porter is left for dead but survives and is fixed up by a black market surgeon. Porter returns to town and quickly goes after Val, when Val is unable to pay him back, Porter kills him and goes after the organization that hold his money. Porter kidnaps the top guys son and holds him ransom for the 70k he is owed. Porter kills the bad guys and gets the money and the movie ends with him driving off.
The directors cut plot is this:
Porter is ripped off by Val for 70k and is left for dead. It is never revealed how Porter is helped to heal from his wounds in this version. He finds Val and kills him when he does not have his money. He goes after the organization that does have his money and starts killing the leaders of the organization. Finally they agree to a drop to give him his money. In the process of completing the drop Porter is seriously injured again but drives off with the money nonetheless.

80% of the time I see a Director's Cut, my immediate thought is, that's why editors also get Academy Awards.
What makes Payback is it's snappiness (is that a word?) and you feel like there's no wasted moments on the screen...
It just moves the plot along...I can see why they would trim the fat from extended scenes.

Really like this movie and haven't seen it in years. Tried to find it and it's not streaming anywhere. Can't even rent it on Prime. Weird

Mel is still on the list - mostly persona non grata.

The Blu Ray's only $17 and has both versions.

I love William Devane's final scene in the movie. Such a frickin weird acting/directing choice.

Im glad to know I wasn't the only one that felt this way. I love the original release and was totally underwhelmed by the DC. It was a completely different movie.

Damn. Didn’t know there was a Director’s Cut. Will have to check that out.

Not intending a thread-jack but if you liked Payback try to find the Michael Caine version of Get Carter from the '60s.

Never seen the DC, but I'm just glad this incredibly underrated movie is getting so much support on here.

If you liked Harry Brown, see this:

Speaking of Payback, it could easily be released as a double-DVD set with Get the Gringo. Same vibe, same wise-cracking, hustling Mel in the world of crime.

Seen both versions, like the DC better, but both versions are really good.
The DC is more in line with the rest of the film while the theatrical version is a lot more Hollywood.
