Why is this movie so hard to find now? You can't even buy a digital copy of it, much less stream it.

Because it’s all about Pedo Joe.

Probably a music rights issue or dispute.
That's typically the reason some films don't show up anywhere sometimes, even notable ones like Sling Blade.

Every time I hit a thrift store or garage sale I’m looking for a copy because like you said it’s impossible to get

My guess is licensing as well. This has always been the case in the past with books and later VHS and DVDs. There is an initial big sales push, then it tapers off. Fans scramble to find old copies. Then at some point the IP comes back alive again, reprints, and the process starts over.
In this era of streaming and kindle, it seems odd that these older films and books are not always available. But often it is as simple as the owner of the IP doesn't feel they are getting the best price from distributors so they put the IP back in the vault for a time. Their logic is why give it away at a low price? Better to keep it on ice until a good deal comes along.

Billy Bob gets Oscar buzz for another role (or god forbid dies) and it’ll get released again as a remastered for 4K or some shite.

Sling blade is like my favorite movie in my favorite genre of movies
“Movies from the 90s where retarded people are played by non retards and it’s not supposed to be funny but it is”
There’s a few of them from that era, all hilarious

Just looked on Amazon, and they sell DVDs of Sling Blade.
Looks like you can get a used copy for under $12.

Dwight is underrated, talent-wise. Billy Bob was in another class in his performance. Even Ritter was excellent but got overshadowed in that movie.
I reckon.

I stand on the hill, not for a thrill, but for the breath of a fresh kill.
Never mind the man who contemplates doin' away with license plates.
He stands alone, anyhow, bakin' the cookies of discontent by the heat of the laundromat vent.
Leavin' his soul!
Then like in poetry I go dot-dot-dot, you know, kinda off center, then I drop down and then I go:
Leavin' his soul!
And partin' the waters of the medulla oblongata of brrrrrr!
mankind!

“I don’t like homosexuals and she goes out and buddies up with one so I gotta deal with that. I don’t like little wimpy-arse kids or mental retards and she got one of each livin’ with her.”

I'm reading the IMDB trivia section for this movie, and this shite is wild:
quote:
Billy Wilder once told Billy Bob Thornton that he was "too ugly" to be an actor, and that he should write a screenplay for himself, where he could exploit his "less than perfect" features. After this movie launched Thornton's career, he publicly discussed his conversation with Wilder, which was at a cocktail party where he was working as a waiter. He got a call from Wilder, who invited him over to his house. Wilder said he didn't recall their conversation, but was glad that he heeded his advice. As a gift, Wilder gave Thornton a paperback copy of this movie's script with his autograph, and a personal message inscribed on it.
quote:
According to Billy Bob Thornton in a February 7, 1997 interview on Howard Stern's radio show, Karl living behind a shed is based on a boy where he grew up who could not walk or talk very well, so his parents kept him in a shed out back. Billy said the boy's mother was scared by a snake when she was pregnant, so they felt he was a child of the devil. They kept him locked up and fed him like a dog. It turned out the boy had polio.
quote:
When Doyle tells Linda that "retards" make him sick, he adds that the same is true for antique furniture and midgets. Billy Bob Thornton has been quoted as saying that two of his phobias are antique furniture and midgets.
quote:
In order to make his walk more awkward and consistent, Billy Bob Thornton placed crushed glass in his shoes.

Maybe JD Shelnut is no longer the Chief of Police.
or it's possible that Frank got a job.
