Did you just say you don't get the hype???
This is a classic movie with some of the most quotable lines. Rodney Dangerfield's character is hilarious.

Hahaha, this was a time when comedy was not a snarky put-down. To many people today think what John Stewart does is actually funny.
Go look at Caddy Shack and Airplane and you will find a lot of humor that really makes you think before you really find it funny. Frankly, Airplane is literally the second best comedy ever behind Blazing Saddles. Those three movies are the best comedies ever. Nothing today even comes close with all this Will Ferrell and others today.

Uh, all three of the movies you laud feature "snarky put downs"

It's not even a cult classic. It's a classic in general. One of the funniest movies ever made.

-Don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch.

Dude, the fricking movie came out in 1980.
You can't watch it in 2016 like a retard and say like Josh Baskin..."I don't get it, I don't get it."
It's a cultural milieu that passed you the frick by.
You missed out on years of understanding Caddyshack jokes if you liked golf growing up.
You probably missed out on Super Mario Bros., VHS porn, Reebok pumps, He-Man, John Hughes movies, the Big Mac, ALF and the Dark Cyrstal.
Doesn't mean those things sucked because you weren't around.
Your next hot take will be that the Rubiks cube is boring compared to your iphone.

Fifty bucks says the Smails kid picks his nose.
Double or nothing he eats it.
If you don't laugh even now watching:
Blazing Saddles
Airplane
Caddyshack
Animal House
then you just don't get humor in general.

You have to answer two questions:
How old are you?
Have you ever played golf or been to a country club?

"Licensed to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. A man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit -- ever. They're like the Viet Cong -- Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote."
"A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice."
"He's on his final hole. He's about 455 yards away, he's gonna hit about a 2 iron I think."
Ty Webb: This your place, Carl?
Carl Spackler: Yeah, whatta ya think?
Ty Webb: It's really... awful.
Carl Spackler: Well, I got a lot of stuff on order. You know... credit trouble.
Carl Spackler: Your place got a pool?
Ty Webb: We have a pond in the back. We have a pool and a pond... Pond'd be good for you.
"I have to laugh, because I've outsmarted even myself. My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days."
Every line Bill Murray did in this movie was improvised. This movie is a comedic masterpiece man.

Airplane is fricking hilarious
Caddyshack and animal house are both good, but they just aren't all-time funny for my generation. It's ok, comedy changes over time. You can appreciate them and understand that they would have been awesome for the time period without thinking they are hilarious.

Hell I'm 34 and Caddyshack would be on my desert island list.

This. In other words, you have to be there. I also think that attitudes related to "what's funny" are somewhat generational. A good example might be the old Saturday Night Live stuff with John Belushi & Co. It was completely hilarious back in the day as we were sitting our the TV smoking pot and ritually watching Saturday Night!! I'm sure many in the subsequent generations don't find it funny at all and likewise I really never got into the newer SNL stuff after the original crew went their separate ways.
Yeah, there are a few things that translate and some thing which are just not funny to a person who "wasn't there".
The Belushi "hamburger" skit is one of those for me. Maybe it would be funny if I was going to places like that before I saw it on television.

Dangerfield is the best part of that movie to me.

Bill murray shoulda won oscar for his role. The baby ruth and puke scene in the convertible are classic scenes. More spectacular than cecil b demille productions.

True. Like I don't find Animal House funny at all but if I had been a college kid at the time I probably would love it.
Caddyshack I do like but it's not one of my favorites. Mostly I find Dangerfield's shtick annoying and cringeworthy.
