I haven't done one of these topics lately. I've been catching the reruns on BBC America and between TNG and DS9 there seems to be a lot of Ferengi episodes.

This is one race I don't think they ever got quite right. Originally in TNG they were portrayed as a pretty advanced race that was more militaristic than what we saw on DS9. While they stayed true to the "Yankee trader" persona that Data initially described them, DS9 turned them more into comic relief and a recreation of "Cheers"

Fortunately Quark, Rom and Nog were solid anchors that had good character development but as an entire race they ender their story with a social justice society instead of the pure capitalist I enjoyed.

Thoughts?

Can't disagree. However, I've always thought they were somewhat based off of disparaging stereotypes of a certain group of people who are always depicted as valuing money over all else.

I don't think so..Remember, this show came out in the mid-late 1980's at the height of the Reagan era which was also called the decade of greed which also gave us "Gordon Gecko" from "Wall Street". I think it's a shot at the more uncontrolled side of capitalism than a certain group. I could be wrong.

I thought they were an attempt for a new enemy for Next Generation. Kirk had the Klingons and Picard would have the Ferengi. The Ferengi story never really took hold and they spun them into second tier comedic relief.

Yeah, I was let down when the new alien threat turned out to be little greedy gremlins. The Borg was a welcome addition as the big bad.

Most annoying fictional species I’ve ever seen on TV.

I thought they were a counterbalance to Will Riker's preachy arrogance; to show that there were other cultures that didn't share his idea of Earthly utopia free from want or money.

They got more cartoonish in DS9, again probably as a counterbalance to the darkness of the "intergalactic genocide" storylines that were evolving concurrently.

And people have been writing about the Ferengi as "Space Jews" since the 90's.

I think think the one character I really didn't care for was Grand Nagus Zek. Hey was beyond silly. When they introduce Quark and Rom's mother to cover Zek's waning memory it got even worse. The leadership structure of the Ferengi should have been more serious. The Brunt character probably portrayed what the leadership should have looked like.

On the other hand Quark was a great character. He saw the universe for what it was and had a very pragmatic way of making the most of that universe. He saw the very best and very worst in people and knew how to exploit it for personal (and also greater good) gain.
