The opening scene of Scream is one of the most underratedly messed up of all time

As I have gotten older, the more it’s struck me how over the top brutal it is.
I’m doing my first rewatch in probably 15 years now

The 90's wanted to shock you.

Poor Steve
And yeah, the sadistic psychological torture of Casey, before the obviously brutal physical attack, is off the charts fricked up.
Tatum’s death is also one that always shook me up. Thinking she’s about to escape only to be decapitated by the garage door, and knowing it was about to happen, fricking brutal.
Such a loss too

Watched it at some pre-teen gathering at someone's house and everyone in the room thought Drew Barrymore was going to be the star, and then everyone's jaw was on the floor five minutes in.
I miss actually being able to shock audiences.
I also can't see a Scream screenshot without hesitating if it was from Scary Movie or not, at least for a split second.

The Scream series brought new blood, so to speak, to a genre that had gotten stale. It was fresh, funny, scary, well-written, and well-acted. Its hallmark of killing off big name actors in the opening scene made it unlike any horror film that had come before. I hope the reboot is able to capture the spirit of the original.

You can still be shocked if you don’t overindulge in internet shite

Honestly, now that I have a newborn, the thought of listening to them breathing their last breaths over the phone the way Casey’s parents do in that opening scene is absolutely terrifying

Have you ever seen Psycho? I think it was a few years before this. The star was not killed off in the opening scene, but quite early in the movie. Which was a shock at the time.

They got that idea from Psycho. I think Drew Barrymore was originally supposed to play Sydney, but she had a scheduling conflict.

Is it just me or do you not see many new slasher movies being made anymore?
I can enjoy slasher type scary movies. What I can't do are the demonic possession type horror films. I stay away from those.

Like most things in Hollywood, they can’t figure out an original concept. And almost every other series, besides the current David Gordon Green Halloween movies, has devolved into self-parody.
I think It Follows should be considered slasher-esque.

Should have been nominated for Picture, Screenplay, and Direction, but the Academy doesn’t know genre-defining, groundbreaking films even when they get slapped in the face with them.
That opening line has the scariest, creepiest exchange I’ve ever seen:
“Why do you want to know my name?”
“Because I want to know who I’m looking at.”

The only thing that always bugged me about that is there aren't really any garage doors strong enough to lift her like that, let alone decapitate her. Certainly not residential ones. I remember being shocked at the absurdity of it.
Random note: Scream was the first and second movies I ever saw at Tinseltown in BR...I liked it that much that I saw it twice within like a week.

Man, that theater was awesome when it first opened.

Scream is a legendary horror movie and the best part of that opening scene is a popular actress, who you expected to be a major character in the movie (she was on the movie poster), was killed off within 10 mins.

As much as I love Scream, Scary Movie has forever changed the way I experience these movies when I watch them
they got it so right in the opening scene. But I agree with the OP, its a great opener. I also saw it looks like they are remaking "I Know What You Did Last Summer" into a show on Prime (what could go wrong lol).

Thought Scream was a bit campy and part comedy when it was released. That's before Scary Movie lampooned it.

Even when I rewatch the exorcist all I can think about is the priest playing Mystikal's "Shake ya arse" on the piano and everyone singing along.
