The 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time

quote:
If cinema is like dreaming with our eyes open, then horror movies could rightly be viewed as waking nightmares: an opportunity to confront our unconscious fears directly — most often as entertainment, but sometimes with the express purpose of terrifying ourselves. On-screen frights take every form imaginable, from iconic boogeymen like Frankenstein and Freddy Krueger to real-world threats, be it psychosis, contagion or off-putting in-laws (“Get Out,” anyone?).
In compiling a list of the genre’s highest achievements, we considered it all, from highbrow to lo-fi, pure schlock to Hitchcock (whose “Psycho” topped our “Greatest Films” list, but not this one), reaching back to the advent of cinema. Well, maybe not quite the beginning. According to legend, 1895 audiences recoiled in fear when they saw the train pull into La Ciotat station in the Lumière brothers’ early actuality film. We don’t count that as horror, though it certainly demonstrated the medium’s capacity to startle people.
The question “What is horror?” echoed at the center of every discussion, with long hours spent arguing over where the boundaries lie for a genre that has launched many a career. How often has one of these waking nightmares upset you enough to resurface in your dreams? If we’ve done our job, you’ll want to join the debate.

1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
2. The Exorcist (1973)
3. Psycho (1960)
4. Jaws (1975)
5. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
6. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
7.Audition (1999)
8. Frankenstein (1931)
9. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)
10. Carrie (1976)
rest of the list

Black Christmas (1973) isn't anyone on that 100 list..Bob Clark more or less invented the slasher genre. List doesn't count, especially with Peeping Tom on there.

I feel like Salo is the only one on the list that doesn’t fit in.

Some of those are overrated
Any list that doesn't have the original Halloween in the top 10 is dumb

I’d tend to agree.
It is effectively a faux snuff film / torture porn and not horror.

I think pound for pound it's the greatest horror movie ever made. The final shot of Leatherface swinging that chainsaw around in the morning sun is one of the most beautiful shots of all time.

Black Christmas > Halloween
both are in my top 10 but Black Christmas is just a better made, scarier movie. Also John Carpenter and Bob Clark were friends and it's obvious you can see Black Christmas' influence on Halloween.

And it probably should be.

He certainly ushered in the wave of slasher films that would dominate the rest of the century, but...

Peeping Tom
Invented the slasher genre. Not sure why its inclusion on this list would be an issue.

I can quibble with the order, and there are plenty of horror films I'd have chosen over some of these, but almost every movie on there is great.
I counted three I don't like: What Lies Beneath, Raw, and Carnival of Souls. I get why Carnival is important. I know people liked Raw much more than I did. I have no idea what What Lies Beneath, a mediocre, overlong zemeckis thriller with virtually no current reputation to speak of, is doing here.

A Nightmare on Elm St. should have been in the top 10. Movie is terrifying.

Back Christmas/Bob Clarke is the conduit between Peeping Tom and Halloween. Makes no sense not to include it.

Agreed, what high achievement did Salo achieve? does not belong on any list in my opinion.
This list also has Planet Terror on there. I mean, Planet Terror was just a nod to the real low budget masterpieces like Maniac, Slumber Party Massacre 2, Night of the Creeps, Night of the Demons etc. The fact that it's on here is just ridiculous. Probably only because Tarantino had some sort of hand in it. The Wailing is also far too low.
Ugh, frick this list lol.
This should be called: "Boomer's top 100 Horror movies of all time"

Hereditary & The Witch are brilliant horror films

Texas Chainsaw is so overrated
If going for an old school list, don't see how Exorcist is below TCM

TCM is the greatest horror movie of all time and has stood the test of time for 50 years.

Clearly you're confused.

Jaws still has me terrified of open water sometimes, and it's been probably 25 years since I first saw it.
The movie itself may not be 'scary," but it damn sure is one of the movies that had the biggest affects on me in my life.
Btw, I added this thread to my Spooky Season thread stickied at the bottom of the board.

lol this guy must have been in the credits. Halloween not being in the top 10 is criminal

My personal top 5 would be:
1. Jaws
2. Halloween
3. The Exorcist
4. The Thing
5. The Shining
Did this "Top 100" list omit Poltergeist? If so, that's inexcusable.
Also "Get Out" at #20 is typical. I like the movie but my God the media has overrated by trying to force it into the greatest of all time categories.
