The Grandmother in Encanto is such a bitch.

I really like this movie. The music is fantastic. I can never get over how mean the grandmother is to Mirabel.

Watched it last night and my wife and I were saying the same thing.
Also really unsatisfying that mirabel doesn’t receive an explicit gift.
Great movie tho

Most of the family is self centered assholes. It’s the crux of the story.
The movie is overrated. Had a good first two acts but third act was a dud. Coco is a million times better.

Kind of the whole point of the movie.
You don’t have to be born with some special gift or incredible talent to make a difference in the world. Just be kind a loving to those around you and you’re more special than anyone else.

Her gift is communication/connection with the house. None of the other characters seem notice what the house is trying to tell them by falling apart. Only Maribel does which allows her, much like the house, to bring the family back together. Its implied that she will take on Abuela’s role when she passes (Abuela doesn’t have an explicit gift either.)
And, yes, Abuela is totally full of herself.

Imagine how much more she was brutal and torturous to Bruno. He’s an unbelievably brutal character when you really ponder his backstory

Abuela's back story explained it all
