The Last Duel sucked... That's why it bombed at the box office (spoilers)

After being extremely intrigued to see a "real" movie in the theater for a change, I cannot state how disappointed I was after watching The Last Duel.
To begin with, it's 2.5 hour runtime felt like twice that. The first act was OK, but then, when it felt like we were about to pick up the action and get into the court scenes and then the duel would immediedtly follow. I felt like the whole crux of the movie was going to be like the film "Doubt" where you really didn't know if there was a moral crime or not and the audience would judge. But that didn't happen.
Instead, the film takes a giant loss in momentum when we have to sit through another 30 Mins or so of Adam Driver's side of the story. But, at least we saw a good bit of Affleck being a noble womanizer and comedic prick. Then, just when you think the Duel is coming..... Yep... Yet Another fricking side of the story... From the wife's point of view.
After that, I was almost ready to walk out of the theater. I didn't even care anymore who won or who lost the battle to the death. I was pretty much over the characters and the story.. And it drug on another half hour for no reason, basically seeing the exact same scenes over again, only slightly different and from a feminist-ish point of view.
The entire film, and all three POVs could have been seemlessly intertwined with more capable script writers (yes, I know Affleck and Damon wrote it and it followed the book closely, but it sucked), editors, and dare I say director (I'm a Scott fanboy, too).
A producer should have stepped in a said "no, we're not showing the same film three times and we're speeding this up, and we're not going over 2 hours. It would have been alot better and it wouldn't have left the audience slogging through the film.
All I kept thinking during the second half of the movie was "damn, we should have gone to watch Dune instead"

Yeesh. Sounds like The English Patient sold as an action film. No wonder the trailer was awful. They were lost in trying to convey (or hide) the actual film in 2 minutes. Multiple POV stories are difficult to pull off...and yes, they overlap each other in often too much repitition.

The rape scene made me so uncomfortable the first time then they go and do it again
Posted in another thread here that the movie felt like “vantage point” set in 1386

As if the first rape scene were not clear enough, we had to see it again, only this time even harsher from the wife's point of view.
I think the audience got the point the first time.
It was needless and a microcosm of the entire film. They could have easily cut out 40+ mins of duplicate scenes and made a much tighter, albeit still not great, film. But it would have at least kept the momentum and made for a much more enjoyable movie. I love Ridley Scott, but this was a pretty big failure on his part.

No. It sounds like Rashomon.
This is Ridley Scott's third best movie, and the duel scene is hands down the scene of the year.
Adam Driver's side of the story is wildly different from Damon's. Damon is basically an dimwitted sourpuss, and his perspective is used to cleanly lay out the relationships and timeline.
The three here overlap in just a few key scenes, as these three characters weren't often sharing the same spaces.
I would recommend OP try again now that he knows what this movie is.

Yeah…your endorsement of this movie removes all doubt for me.
I will not be watching this film.

I was gonna drag my wife to see it but if there are rape scenes then I won’t bother. She doesn’t like those.

Yes, the endorsement of someone who watches a ton movies without bitching about how woke everything is. I posted an opinion based on what the movie actually is, where the OP posted an opinion wrapped up in what he wanted the movie to be and what he thought the trailer was.
I can be so horrifying.

Or figuratively, as in they're living in the same room, but viewing their world in three entirely different points of view?

That and you're an insufferable snob.

I used to be the biggest Ridley Scott fanboy on the planet, but you really don't know what you are gonna get these days.
He's really fallen off as he's aged

You deserve it for going to a theater and choosing not to see dune while there

I thought the movie was great, and I particularly enjoyed seeing both the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between each perspective. I can't stand movies that sacrifice the story to push an agenda, but I didn't think this movie did that at all. It doesn't take a feminist to be troubled by how women were treated in that time.

Ridley Scott has always been hit or miss with me. For every Gladiator or The Martian he also gives us a G.I. Jane or a Prometheus.

As I said in my thread, it was just alright. Didn’t hate it but didn’t love it

The problem with this movie is that the first two acts sell it as a “there’s some truth in everybody’s version of a story but nobodies version is completely true”
At that point I’m thinking “oh this will be cool and leave a lot of doubt in the audiences mind“
That’s because, even in their versions, the men were flawed individuals.
then comes the woman’s version where she’s completely blameless or infallible. And the movie frames this as the true version. I’m not saying that a rape victim is asking for it or anything like that. I’m saying her being depicted and accepted as such completely makes the first two versions stupid and unnecessary. It becomes uneven storytelling and leaves the audience wondering why they wasted an hour and a half. It also takes all of the drama out of the courtroom scene, the doubts of the characters, and the duel itself.

Adam Driver willingly took part in The Last Jedi
Therefore his acting doesn’t matter
