Great, another change that didn't need to happen. Can't believe Matt was the one that actually asked for it.

"They never got around to changing his name in the comics like they did with the Riddler, going from Edward Nigma to Edward Nashton, from an unreal name to a real name," producer Dylan Clark said in the latest SFX Magazine. "By doing that they grounded the character."
"We had a lot of conversations with DC Comics and with Jim Lee [President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer]," he continued. "They had thought about changing his name at some point but had never done it. Matt asked, 'Can I call our character Oz Cobb?' And Jim said, 'Absolutely!' So we got a blessing from the king himself. That small change of the name allowed us to look at this character in a grounded way."
Writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc added, "Matt's created new canon in his film, and I'm creating new canon in this show. We have characters you're familiar with but there's a different spin on them."
"It felt like in the Gotham City that Matt created in his film, Cobblepott seemed less of a real person in the way that Cobb is a real last name. He's a gangster and it just kind of felt more correct."

He can get the frick outta here acting like Oz Cobb is a more realistic name that grounds the character.

How is Nigma worse than Nashton? They’re both made up names. All last names are kinda made up

Clearly Oswald Cobblepot becomes a gangster because he has a stupid name and can’t be taken seriously otherwise. While Oz Cobb becomes a gangster because his parents were illiterate

Better than the new Batman on Prime that made the Penguin a woman.

This is stupid. And very telling about the minds of people that are bringing TV and movie projects forward. They live in a bubble. Yet have a mission to force us out of a perceived bubble, they think we are trapped in. All because of their self-importance, that has never, and will never exist
Thats why most projects now involve reshaping historic characters by race, gender, sexual preference, etc. They dont have fresh ideas. Strictly because they live in an alternate reality, where historic stories/characters must be set right

Can't really hate on them because they're going for the most "real" universe that any of the films have done. Oswald Cobblepot is a ridiculous name. Cool comic book name, not a great or believable real world name. You don't see many Oz Cobb's running around either but it is more believable.

Oz Cobb is a stupid name.

They should have gone with Oswald “Oz” Cobb, if they were so hellbent on change.

For sure. I kind of assumed it would be Oswald "Oz" Cobb when I was reading it.

Oswald Cobblepot is a believable name. It's not like his name was P.N. Guinn.

This is so fricking stupid, idiot showrunners

I mean the riddlers name being
E. Nigma is a little unrealistic.

It's the "this is my take on ____" which is just another way of saying I'm completely changing it.

What's really sad to me in this specific case is they seem to think his name is so ridiculous it would actually hurt the show.
The easy solution if you're worried the audience would check out over it would be to have some dumb arse criminal pop off about his name and Penguin killing him in a harsh arse way to show what happens if you frick with him. Easy peasy. You get to see how ruthless he is AND you have a scene that shows he's not going to be anything like Burgess Meredith or Danny Devito.
But no, the name needed to be changed to ground it. Grounding a show in reality is very important... which is why they also decided to hire Collin Ferrel to be the great and powerful Oz and put him in such a heavy amount of makeup and prosthetics w/a fat suit that it's now become a major talking point about the show which of course, puts it in the back of the viewer's head at all times they're watching an actor in a fat suit untethering them from the very grounding the show runners wanted in the first place.

I’ll just stick with Batman Returns.
