Complete with Robert Downey Junior staying in character the whole time, allowing him to say the most ridiculous sh*t.

I know this movie is beloved on here, but man it just missed the frick out of me. I was so disappointed and thought it was pretty bad. And I like almost every actor in it too.

I just remember not liking RDJ at all, and Tom Cruise getting on my nerves in every scene he was in (and I know his part is most peoples' favorite). Maybe I should give it another shot now that it's been years since I've seen it.

Hey man to each their own but I’d say give it another try. If you still don’t like it, then it’s just not your cup of tea and that’s ok

I can see Tropic Thunder’s over the top style of comedy not being for everyone. But damn, they knock it out the park in their genre. I would give this classic another shot.

I was the same way. I watched it once and thought it was funny, but not the masterpiece some on here claim it to be. Then I watched some of the outside the movie stuff from RDJ. The scene of him in the hotel room like it was a documentary had me crying I was laughing so hard. Then realizing none of that was scripted makes it all the better.

Def try giving it another shot. I hated it as well but watched it recently and actually enjoyed it. Could be an age thing, I dunno - that or maybe how anti-PC it is made me appreciate it more.

It reminds me of Airplane! in that a lot of people love it, but my wife hates the fact that there are so many jokes in a single frame (she wants to get all of it in a single viewing, so the appeal of "seeing new jokes on each viewing" doesn't mean much for her). I know some others who don't care for that "a joke in every frame" style of movie, so you get a bunch of people who absolutely hate it.

Disagree on RDJ but completely agree on Tom Cruise. He’s the worst part of the movie.

It was an obvious PR move by him to drop the preachy Scientology persona he had developed when he blasted Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants back in 2005.

His star power had declined. (Mission Impossible 3 didn’t do well at the box office despite being one of the better movies in the series.)

I can just imagine his agent talking him into doing the movie. “Tom, people think you like the smell of your own farts. You’ve got to take this bit part in this Ben Stiller movie.”

In any case, all of his moments come off as too try-hard in the movie. (Hader and McConnaughey are doing fine themselves, despite being in the exact same scenes as Cruise.)

Tropic Thunder & Step Brothers are the 2 funniest movies from the 2000-2010 decade.

And the commentary is hilarious

And from what I remember, that's one reason I didn't like the movie. I remember thinking the whole thing felt way too try-hard for me. Like it was just trying to be funny instead of actually being funny, if that makes sense.

That’s sort of a problem I have with many Frat Pack and Frat Pack-adjacent movies. Stiller and Jack Black also come off a bit too try-hard.

But RDJ, Nolte, Hader, and were pitch perfect, so the movie still works for me.

It's weird you say that, because I am big fans of Stiller and Black, but don't particularly like RDJ and Hader. To each his own I guess.

I still may give this one another shot if I ever catch it on or just can't think of something to watch.

There are parts that are legitimately funny

And there are parts that are forced and feel out of place

It’s like a poorly written movie wrapped up in great comedy if that makes sense

It was saved, really, by the charisma and wit of the actors themselves IMO

Not liking Hader is insane to me

Aren’t you a big fan of Community? You should be able to appreciate how meta it is as a comedy. I love the whole bit about Ben Stillers character going off on his own and filming his own scenes because Ben Stiller was the director for this movie so he was really making a satire of his own movie and role

I like the movie. One thing I didn't like so much was Jack Black. And I like Jack Black. I just think he was "going for it" a little too hard.

The other two leads were on point.
