Viggo Mortensen apparently really is Aragorn

At least, he's one cool motherfricker...
From the "trivia" on IMDB:
Viggo Mortensen did his own stunts. He also insisted on using only the real steel sword, instead of a significantly lighter aluminum sword, or safer rubber sword, which were manufactured for battle scenes and stunts.
Viggo Mortensen chipped a tooth while filming a fight sequence. He wanted Peter Jackson to superglue it back on, so he could finish his scene, but Jackson took him to the dentist on his lunch break, had it patched up, and returned to the set that afternoon.
Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), who is trilingual in English, Spanish, and Danish, requested the script be revised, to let Aragorn speak more of his lines in Elvish.
Veteran Sword Master Bob Anderson called Viggo Mortensen "the best swordsman I've ever trained."
Viggo Mortensen purchased Arwen's horse after production and gave it to Liv Tyler's riding double.
Viggo Mortensen kept his sword with him at all times off-set, so that he could remain in character. He was questioned several times by Police, after reviewing his training sessions with the sword, and being spotted by members of the public.
Because Lawrence Makoare's vision was impaired while he was made-up to look like Lurtz, he could not pull punches during the sequences when he battles Aragorn in hand-to-hand combat. Rather than having Makoare do this sequence over until he could pull his punches, Viggo Mortensen decided to fight back just as realistically, making the physical blows completely real.
Viggo Mortensen broke two toes while kicking the steel helmet by the orc pyre, and that take is the one that appears in the final cut. Director Peter Jackson said that he was really impressed with the shout of pain Aragorn cried out for the fate of the two Hobbits, realizing only later that it was real pain for his toes. He was also impressed by the fact that Mortensen continued acting, even while so seriously injured. Mortensen later remarked that the only reason it was even mentioned, on the DVD release, was because he was an actor, and that the stunt crew were injured far worse and pushed through it.
The dawn shot of Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas pursuing the Uruk-hai, came about when Viggo Mortensen persuaded the Second Unit team to camp-out on-location. Mortensen's efforts in organizing the overnight trip were so effective, that actors and crew from the other film units, including Miranda Otto, came out to join him.
Viggo Mortensen estimates that during the course of filming the trilogy, and including all of takes, he "killed" every stuntman on the production at least fifty times.
Also, one that's not on there...
The scene at the end of Fellowship when the orc throws a knife at Aragorn/Mortensen and he knocks it away with his sword was a sheer accident. The orc was supposed to use a prop/rubber knife and messed up. Mortenson could have been seriously injured but for his quick reflexes.

That seems like bullshite, but if true it's pretty awesome.
That's a pretty drastic mistake to make though. You know you're supposed to be throwing a giant fake knife at someone, but "accidentally" throw a real one?

Don’t bring a fake knife to a fake gun fight

Fake real gun 1-0
Fake real knife 0-1
Stats don’t lie

You left out perhaps the most impressive thing he did while filming the LoTR though.
He was cast while the movie was shooting.
Peter Jackson realized a couple of days into filming he had cast the wrong actor to play Aragorn. He had to be replaced and Viggo Mortenson was the choice.
Viggo came down and nailed the part. Including shooting some intensive action scenes right off the bat.
So one week he was sitting at home with his wife and kids and the next week he was half way around the globe filming the fight scene at Weathertop.

Yep. And you can tell because he’s very wristy with that big sword on weathertop - because he hasn’t gotten any real training yet. Later he gets much more proficient with it.

Exactly. Its impressive he pulled it off and that he managed to acquire that level of skill while filming.
Chloe Moretz, rightly, gets a lot of praise for her work in the first "Kick-arse" movie but she spent two months training for it before the movie even started. Something that is not uncommon in Hollywood I should add.
Viggo got dropped in the deep end right off the bat and pulled it off which is amazing.

Said my wife about when we first got married when later explaining what a swordsman I've now become over the years.

It’s amazing how such prose flows from my fingertips without even me realizing it.

Watched Fellowship last night for the first time in a few years. Still a great movie. Amazing how some of the CGI holds up yet some of it is so outdated now.
Of course, the movie is also almost 20 years old (frick, I'm old).

Did he throw a real one? All it said is he "messed up". Probably threw the rubber one but was not supposed to throw it at Viggo but to the side of Viggo, but Viggo knocked it away. I find it doubtful that they would give real knives to any of the Uruk-ai actors, seeing as their weapons and their screen time was not a primary focal point, nor lended to the acting.

Well, to be fair, I think Viggo is stage trained and likely had to take swordfighting classes for that purpose. That's not to say it isn't impressive. He still had to learn the choreography and such, and if he was using a real sword or even a fake sword for that particular fight, he had to get used to the way that thing moved.

I've read the LOTR trilogy at least 6 times, the first time being in 6th grade. I never pictured Aragorn like the native Indian looking one from the animated Ralph Bakshi movie.
When I first saw Viggo's Aragorn sitting in the shadows of the Prancing Pony, I thought "YES! That's what Aragorn son of Arathorn looks like!
Yes, I'm a nerd. Don't care.

And to get deeper in to nerdom, for any of you that have read the Elric of Melninone' series, Tom Hiddleton would make the perfect Elric
