Was Tony Soprano a good boss?

The more I consider it I start to think no.
Jackie had things running smoothly for several years and then under Tony’s reign the family is effectively wiped out.
Or was he dealt an impossible hand?

Are we sure Jackie had things running smoothly? I assume mob work is always messy with infighting

No. Good mob bosses don’t go to Shrinks.

No, he wasn't a good boss. That's what made him so compelling and interesting. Probably my favorite tv character of all time.

He couldn’t control his emotions. Got himself in hot water a bunch of times after losing temper.

i'd argue he made a much, much bigger family back down to him repeatedly

To be fair there was a power vacuum after Jackie died. Jackie was put in charge by the original DiMeo family so his death (plus the all the Dimeo's being gone) opened up the organization to a lot of people looking to take some power for themselves. I'm kind of disappointed they didn't flesh out that part of the story. Could explain why after taking over, Tony started getting challenged left and right.

season 3 they had the flashback where Junior blew up one of Jackie's garbage trucks?? it was focusing more on the guys looking back trying to figure out when the feds flipped Pussy.

He let Big Pussy back into the fold after he disappeared for months. He was in constant conflict and later murdered Ralph, his biggest earner. He kept Chris around, knowing he was a heroin junkie with a penchant for fame and Hollywood. He mishandled the Tony B. situation, which caused anger and resentment with New York. He mishandled the Vito situation, which caused even more anger and resentment with Phil. Tony was a a terrible boss imo.

Loyalty to Tony B was the beginning of the end.

he let him earn but it was clear that there were trust issues. Like the time they asked him to leave the table at the restaurant so they could talk.
Pussy wasn't really back in the fold until they executed Matthew B at the snack bar for shooting Christopher.
I haven't done a rewatch in a long time so I might be forgetting some stuff.

No but he is the GOAT tv character.

Meh - Jersey isn't a family, it's a glorified crew - "boss" is more like a capo on steroids.
So, however long they maintained their modicum of independence, they should be grateful.

I don't think Tony was a good boss, too emotional and that let quite a few situations get the best of him. However, we know zilch about how things were going under Jackie based on what the show tells us, so not much to compare.

Bad boss and poor family. Dad was a hothead. The women in his life fricked him up. His mom by being evil and Carmela by being normal. His mother was an evil gangster herself, and Carmela was always a normal housewife. The mob life was something she became good at but was not born into. They pulled him into different directions that toppled him.

I always loved how they didn't believe in divorce because of the "sacrament" but didn't mind having affairs, stealing, murdering, etc.
Quite hypocritical

Both he and Phil were emotional hotheads. Jackie and Carmine both seemed more cool and business like.

Tony was a better boss than Carmine. Carmine's family was constantly out of control with in-fighting.
