Which would be over 5 miles below sea level if Everest is the only dry land.
Not too sure you've got your altitudes right ... but I'll check. Lemme see.
quote:
Although Denver's nickname is the "Mile-High City" because its official elevation is one mile above sea level, defined by the elevation of the spot of a benchmark on the steps of the State Capitol building, the elevation of the entire city ranges from 5,130 to 5,690 feet (1,560 to 1,730 m).
quote:
Mount Everest ... The 8,848 m (29,029 ft) height given is officially recognised by Nepal and China, although Nepal plans a new survey. In 1856, Andrew Waugh announced Everest (then known as Peak XV) as 8,840 m (29,002 ft) high, after several years of calculations based on observations made by the Great Trigonometric Survey.
29,029
-5,690
23,339
÷5,280
=4.42026515151 miles
So let's say 4.5 miles deep ... which is less than five miles but still too deep for practically anything to dive.
quote:
The Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in the Earth's seabed hydrosphere, with a depth of 10,898 to 10,916 m (35,755 to 35,814 ft) by direct measurement from submersibles, and slightly more by sonar bathymetry. It is in the Pacific Ocean, at the southern end of the Mariana Trench near the Mariana Islands group.

I first said 4... then changed to 5 doing the approximate math in my head without looking anything up.
Either way it's deep. Really really deep.

Is Waterworld one of those movies that became more appreciated as the years have gone by or does everyone still think it's garbage?
I still think it’s mostly retarded

Interesting factoid- all of his calculations showed Everest to nearly exactly 29,000 feet, but he feared that if he published that number people would assume it to be inaccurate; therefore he added the 2 feet to it.

Nitpicking is not good for this movie but it's still fun.
I like the movie myself. Enjoy it. I dont cut it up to pieces like so many do. Its entertaining.
I mean if we are going to dissect movies up like this, maybe we should start with everyones love of the new superhero movies.

Waterworld is a entertaining movie. Dont try and take it too much farther than that

Plus why is the weather always sunny and mild? They're trekking across the entire globe it seems and nothing changes.
the ironical thing is that the weather during the shoot was terrible and they even lost most of the floating set in a typhoon
the opening transition from the universal globe logo to the flooded planet was bad arse.
costners sailboat was bad arse
jeanne tripplehorns naked bod was bad arse
the imagining of what a floating city would look like (an atoll) was clever as was the use of the Exxon Valdez
visually stunning movie with a plot best not analyzed too deeply

I also question how anyone is even surviving at 20,000+ feet above (today's) sea level, especially with virtually no plant life left on earth to give off oxygen.
Maybe that's why it never rains.

They pick this apart, but they ignore huge leaps of stupidity from shite like Looper.
Yeah, how'd Looper go for you folks? Did its visionary director go on to bigger and better things? Like we all knew he would?

I feel the same way about people that roll on the floor laughing at Kingdom of the Crystal Skull because of aliens and then turn around and cry when Raiders of the Lost Ark didn't win best picture, a move centered around a treasure with supernatural powers

I just think people turn the scrutiny spigot on and off at will, for no real reason I can discern.

also, while we are rehabbing waterworld, the postman deserves a reappraisal also.
it’s way too long and parts are hokey as hell, but it’s a good story with a message of hope and a good dose of patriotism that this country could use some more of from time to time
like waterwold it’s well shot and the scenery is beautiful
plus if you like him the postman is peak costner

The postman, for me, is a far cry from Waterworld.
Waterworld was just fun, especially with Hopper basically stealing every scene he's in. The postman is just too self-indulgent and way, way too long.
I also wouldn't say the postman is peak Costner, if anything it really marked the end of his run.
His peak, from a box office standpoint, was actually probably Robin Hood. He had just come off Dances with Wolves and was maybe the biggest movie star in the world at the time.
