I think "What the hell was up with his wife?" is the more relevant question.

Deniro is famously part of the method school, although now he more or less plays caricatures of himself. He researched the role exhaustively and probably based his appearance on Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, who was the real life basis for Sam "Ace" Rothstein.

I think they were just trying to age him for the last scene.
They went way overboard though, because those are more goggles than glasses.

I've always wondered if Elliott Gould's character in Ocean's 11 wasn't some kind of homage to Sam Rothstein

The next time you're buying eyeglasses, try on a pair of those Swifty Lazar / Jiminy Glick glasses.
Make sure that you have someone with you to talk you out of buying them. Because once you try them on, you'll see that they're the most comfortable glasses that you've ever worn. There's a reason that old men who no longer give a frick wear them.

Not uncommon glasses for old Jews in the 80s and 90s.
Considering he was playing an old Jew they make sense.

Glasses?
The characters departure from normal wise guy suits to salmon and teal colored suits? Amongst others. Terrible.

Because he could still pick winners, and he could still make money for all kinds of people back home. And why mess up a good thing ...
