The song I’m sure most of you know well, “Copperhead Road” by Steve Earle is a masterpiece of a song. It has everything, musically, lyrically, etc. The song tells a kickass story with kickass music. I also love Steve’s vocals. This song should be considered an all-time great. Do you agree?

It's a fun song. I like it but....
There are contradictory lines in the song that always bothered me as a writer
"was before my time but I've been told, you could smell the whiskey burnin down Copperhead Road" then there's this: "him and my uncle tore that engine down, I still remember that rumblin sound"
Which is it Steve?

Auggie that's not how the song goes. The part about "before his time" is in reference to the tax man.

Love that song. There was a thread in here about a week or so ago with folks adding a line of two from the song in order. I don't know if it got finished or not

Recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis.

Always thought a movie could be made over the whole moonshine culture of the South with this song as inspiration

Yeah, the second verse ends with "He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load/You could smell the whiskey burning down Copperhead Road."
I learned a few years back that there was a real life Copperhead Road in Johnson County, TN (very northeast tip of the state). They ended up renaming it Copperhead Hollow Road because people kept stealing the street signs.

Justin Townes Earle is one of my favorite artists. Does not have a bad album. Life was cut way too short. Supposedly very complicated father/son relationship.
Two of my favorites are:
Harlem River Blues
The Saint of Lost Causes
Also, Jason Isbell wrote a great sad song about him on his most recent album.

It’s a really good song

Johnny Come Lately is another good song off that album. It too suffers from continuity problems. It's a Vietnam veteran relating a story about how his grandparents met during WWII, which is a full generation off.
I like Steve as long as I don't have to listen to him talk too much. I'm by no means MAGA but Steve is a full blown lefty radical

As is most musicians. I think hearing about racism and people who actually are racist talk makes people flock to the left. Some of my best friends are minority musicians and we get along great, just can’t talk politics. Usually being able to play music is a sign of intelligence, and there is a silent group that agrees with the right; they just can’t be vocal about it

Agreed, def picked up from his father and his father's mentor TVZ.
Learned today that he was 6'6" caught me off-guard.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it as many times as I have to. I saw Steve play in Austin (the whole Copperhead Road album incidentally) right after Trump was elected. The Only political statement he made was “everyone try and love one another, no matter who you voted for," or something close to that. Steve may be out there, but he is truly a man of thr people who never forgot where he comes from. Compare that to some sanctimonious douche like Isbell who has become so insulated in the "in crowd" that he has nothing but contempt for the average american. The average John Lee Pettimore, if you will.

A 3 or maybe 4 season series would work.
Begin season 1 focused on granddaddy
Next season focused on dad
Season 3 on the son and turning the business legitimate

Needless to say, Walton Goggins will be starring in this.

This is my hunting camp song. I turn it on for the last 4 miles of my drive down old state rd. I waited all day for him to play this song at Jazzfest years ago.

Nice tune. Loved it live.

He has another good song called Telephone Road. Well it's good if you know the history of Telephone Road in Houston. Now, it's just a through way to Hobby Airport. But I can remember when it was full of ice houses and prostitution.
