Don McLean wrote some great tunes. I like American Pie but it's easily worn out. Vincent is a timeless song that is just brilliant all around. It highlights the best facets of Don McLean's voice. Give it a listen again and enjoy.

I really like it, but have to point out that someone listed it in the worst song thread

I always thought so.

I auctioned off this Starry Night guitar at a songwriter fundraiser I was involved with. Always loved the song and got all the songwriters to sign it first. One of them grabbed it and played the song in his set.

I agree. He and Jim Croce are perhaps the finest balladeers I’ve ever heard… The lyrics in Vincent are incredibly touching and flow beautifully...

Interesting tidbit....Don McClean was the inspiration behind the song Killing Me Softly with His Song after Lori Lieberman saw him in concert.

I always loved Chet Atkins’s guitar arrangement of Vincent.

Absolutely. It is so eloquently done. Vincent (Chet Atkins)

Always loved this song even before I knew it was Don. It has a way of getting in your head an won't leave. For me it was the music over the lyrics, but there are very few songs about artists, like Van Gogh.

Subject matter-wise, it reminds me of McCartney's Picasso's last words, and Pablo Picasso (Burning Sensations version).

I almost feel Don McLean's career was killed by 'American Pie'. I remember when it came out, that song was on AM radio rotation every hour for months! Got to a point where people were so sick of hearing it, they moaned and changed the station. Classics like 'Vincent' seemed to be overlooked in comparison, which is a shame.
