If they trade up and give up a bunch to do it, yeah maybe

But staying put and doing it at 9 won't be that big a deal even if it doesn't work out.

You have to take shots at QB. I'm not a Sanders believer but if they do it I hope it works out.

It also could give a team incentive to trade up to 8 with Carolina to get ahead of us

I hope we don't draft a QB at 9. I also do not know which QB I would prefer if we do draft one. My gut say Dart over Sanders but that may have more to do with the fact I have seen Dart play a lot more than I have seen Sanders. I am not sure there is a home run QB in this draft

I guess the counter to that argument is the franchise is not going anywhere significant unless they find a franchise QB. A guy who they are unlikely to land in free agency. Particularly when the cost of signing a veteran QB in free agency is significantly higher than drafting a QB out of college (see the cost to sign Carr). Fans will say "just tank this season for a top 3-5 draft pick and select a QB then." That sound good in theory, but teams, coaches, players generally don't share that mindset. Particularly a first time HC. They want to win as many games as possible next year (otherwise, why put in the work if you aren't going to try to win?). I'm sure the thought in the coaches' offices is they don't plan on having a top 10 pick next season because they will win too many games this season.

Thus, while the Saints aren't willing to pay the price Carolina did to trade up to get Young, they are going to strongly consider the "bird in the hand" if a QB they like is there at 9 rather than pass on the position of need for the uncertainty of next year. If you "hit" and Sanders is a franchise QB, then you set yourself up for potential success for 10-15 years. If you "miss", you more or less end up in the same spot you are now and will take another swing at a QB in a couple of years...without having to eat the prohibitive cost of a free agent average QB

Sanders will never be on the roster. People should stop dreaming up wild scenarios…

Yah know I like Shedeur, he a good kid but am not sure fan of his play. I also was not a fan of lamar jackson play and look how he turned out. Lamar gets wins but cannot get the big to get to super bowl and win it all.
Lamar and Shedeur are total different styles but am just not a fan of the guy. I believe it's all a smoke screen Kellen moore putting out or at least I hope so.

A week ago wasn't the Quinn Ewers talk real? I don't see either of the two going this early.

The counter to your counter is the evidence points to no franchise QB being in this draft and that you could pick up at least one of the QBs who may be a diamond in the rough in round two and not waste draft capital on an overvalued player.

Also, you can argue that you have too many needs to have a QB make a difference in your team unless there is a generational QB at #9 in the draft and there does not seem to be a generation QB in this draft at all.

would be interesting to go back and see how many 1st rounders for the Saints that totally shite the bed. I just don't have the stomach for it lol

I bet if you looked back at all NFL teams it’ll be about the same for most franchises. Unless you’re drafting an OL hitting on a first rounder is probably 50/50 at best, especially for skill position players.

Now drafting Erxleben stands out due to his position and ultimate failure. Can’t excuse that one.

Watch Dart beat Georgia week 5 and get back to me.

He was helped greatly by his backup who took them down the field and scored a touchdown. He was a good QB in a very QB friendly offense for a team that underachieved commensurate to their talent. I’ll pass unless it’s out of the first round.

I’ll take at least a year break from the Saints if they draft Sanders. My fandom level is already around 25% of what it was a decade ago.

If he is there at 9, does Cleveland come calling to trade back into the top 10 to pair Sanders and Hunter back together?

Would give NOLA a great haul of picks for sure!

They've only drafted 1, Archie.

I don't recall that they have ever drafted one in the 2nd round either.
Technically 2. We used a 1st rounder in the supplemental draft for Dave Wilson (bust).

So, wait, you credit Simmons for 1 drive? I agree the offense is a QB friendly offense (like most in college now), but he is a very good QB. Overall, though the QBs in this draft are just not upper 1st round players in most drafts.

Dart’s first pass of the game was an INT. He wasn’t playing well at all. The backup settled the team down and Dart played better from there.

I don’t buy the Dart hype overall. If the choice is really Shedeur or Dart at 9. Shedeur is the easy choice.

Preferably, I’d take Will Campbell or Tyler Warren over either and then try to snag McCord in the 3rd.

Dart led them to that win (along with a great defensive game). One drive by Simmons was not the deciding factor. I doubt Sanders is there at 9. I do not get the Campbell hype. He was good at LSU, but not top 10 good. Shows how weak this draft is. I like Warren but there are many TEs not much less talented that will be available in rounds 2-3. Taylor is not a big downgrade.

Just saw your post.

You'd have to get a 26 1st to make it worthwhile.

Or throw in Delpit. We could use a good, young safety.

Absolutely. It was a really key moment in the game. Dart had already thrown a pick and the game was definitely in Georgia's favor at the time Simmons came in. That drive was absolutely huge and settled Ole Miss down. How do you not credit him for that one drive?
