Russell Erxleben was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round (11th pick overall) of the 1979 NFL Draft.

He was actually a tremendous kicker and punter in college. However, the Saints didn’t do any sort of research to find out whether or not he could kick without having the 2-inch tee that they used for field goals in college at the time. As it turned out, he couldn’t kick off the ground and wound up being a average punter.

The irony of Erxleben's one lowlight against the Falcons was that the mishap wasn't even his fault. The long snapper snapped the ball way over his head and he had to chase the ball. It probably cost us the playoffs that year because the Saints finished 8-8

Didn't the SWC also allow the ball to be filled with a certain amount of helium in it that made punts go 15-20% longer?

Russell Erxleben's downfall in the pros probably had more to do with lack of using a tee that they were allowed to use in college at the time. You can see it in the photo.

Three SWC kickers made 65+ yard FGs during Erxleben's time.

I remember it. #11 in round one. HOF Kellon Winslow went two spots later.
The rationale from the Saints was that Erxleben could fill 2 roster spots, PK and P. This was back in the days of 40 man rosters. Of course the fact that he sucked at both jobs put a damper on things.
