April 9, 1953:
As an F3 tornado passed near Champaign, IL that day, radar picked up the hook echo of the thunderstorm for the first time ever.

what is a hook echo
It’s the sound a tornado makes on radar.

Now every thunderstorm has a hook echo.

Good catch. I haven’t thought about that game since the 80’s.

The tornadic part of a super cell thunderstorm often appears as a “hook” on the southern side of the storm on radar. For a modern day example, here is a radar grab from the December 2021 Mayfield, KY EF-4 tornado:

You can see how there is a hook shape on the southwest side of the storm. That is the tornadic part of the thunderstorm, and the purple ball on the bottom of that hook is actually the radar picking up on debris that was being lifted into the air. You get the hook shape because of how the moving air wraps precipitation around the mesocyclone. A well defined hook like you see above is a sign of a well-organized, strongly rotating storm.

Quick!
Tell me when the first tornado forecast was made.
No cheating.

I can’t tell you when it was but I know it involved a military base that had been hit by a tornado days earlier. One morning the forecasting meteorologist noticed the conditions were similar to the one when the tornado hit, so he took a chance and forecasted tornadic weather. He ended up being right.

I still play occasionally (on an emulator).
