I came close a few times as a kid playing at my grandmother's house on the Ouachita river.
And by close I mean I ran like a scalded cat whenever I encountered one.

Had one bite into my leather boot and not go all the way through. The venom was dripping down the side.
I freaked out and took it and my sock off looking for marks. After I blasted that snake with my 410 obviously

I got a dry bite when I was a kid. My friend picked one up by the tail and swung it towards me and it bit my hand. I barely felt it, there were two small puncture wounds near my thumb.

Typically potheads are not aggressive

Just by my wife, the next day after drinking. I learned to get her water more quickly after that.

Pastor at a local church got bit by one recently. He went directly to hospital, 20 vials of antivenom administered, each costing $7,000, and still spent a week in ICU.

Wish I had a dollar for every time someone has misidentified one of a number of non-venomous water snake species for a cottonmouth.
Of course, the joy I have gotten picking up and tossing a northern water snake on someone who thinks it is a cottonmouth is absolutely priceless so I guess I am ahead either way.

I got bit by one on the ankle when I was a teenager. scariest part was the drive from Pineville to the England AFB hospital.
It isn't pleasant. Foot swole up something fierce. Got tons of attention from the girls in our group though.

My grandfather was bitten by one while frogging. Never went to the hospital. Laid in bed a couple of days and went back to farming.

If you did that to me, when I get back, we are fighting

All the stories I've heard about the whopper cottonmouths in that river, I'd have a hard time ever being comfortable doing anything involving it.

I know a couple ol' baws who, if they had it on them, would probably shoot Obtuse just out of instinct if he pulled that.

Grew up skiing and fishing on that river and Bayou DeSiard. Never worried about snakes/gators in the river, but definitely did in that bayou

That's crazy. I think I was administered 2 big antivenom shots and was on a IV of something for about 7 -8 hours. I was at the hospital for 12 hours or so. I didn't even have to spend the night.

I had a chocolate lab when I was younger that really enjoyed catching snakes and lizards. I could tell when he had the scent of one as he would get all excited on stomp his front feet. He would hold off until I gave him the go ahead then dive in and come out with his prize. Well one day I see him all jazzed up on the edge of my mothers flower bed. I give him the go ahead and in he goes. When he comes out of the flowers he’s got this water moccasin mid body and the dang thing is repeatedly striking him in the mouth face and head. I finally get the dog to drop the snake and rush him to the vet. By the time I get there his head is swollen to twice it’s normal size. We got a call the next day to come pick him up all back to normal.

Yeah shite a water snake can look almost just like a cottonmouth. We might be past the point of no return before I realized this
