Sir Ernest Shackleton, in his 1919 book South, described his belief that an incorporeal companion joined him and his men during the final leg of his 1914–1917 Antarctic expedition, which became stranded in pack ice for more than two years and endured immense hardships in the attempt to reach safety. Shackleton wrote, "during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three".[1] His admission resulted in other survivors of extreme hardship coming forward and sharing similar experiences.

Used to do that. Got exhausting, sneaking around in the wilderness, whispering to folks. Didn't pay enough.

Everyone should read Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Insane what they went through.

Surely most have read it by now, it’s recommended by lots of people.

First they misspelled bizarre, then they drew in a silhouette for a disembodied presence. Finally they misspelled advice. Retards.
Anyway the phenomenon is pretty interesting.

This is that person that pulls you out of your wrecked vehicle and stays with you till help arrives, whereupon you are told that you were alone and then asked how the frick did you get yourself out of that wreck?
There's a book, 'the angel effect' where a bunch of these are documented.

Yup, but never knew that there was a name for it.

I thought this was a reference to Orson Welles’ classic performance.
