My butler's dog has a room that doesnt cool very well in the Summer. He was thinking about getting a windowless portable air cooler. Im assuming they dont work as well as a window unit, but do they work at all?

Something portable that you just plug in. Would be nice to be able to move it from room to room if needed.

Do you mean an evaporator cooler? That would be counterproductive as part of cooling is to get humidity out of your house. Evaporator coolers only work outside or in an open garage.

I have one. It's pretty old and works well for emergencies. Has to vent to outside though.

Are you talking about a portable AC unit that connects the exhaust (some the intake also) through a window or something else entirely?

why assume that. it's the same thing except instead of condensation dripping outside, it stays inside. some used to have a tank. now some dry faster they it builds up. I've had both kinds but it's been awhe.

Yea the windowless part confused me then I realized what he was talking about. Theres not such thing as windowless units as they all have to exhaust out of the window.

To answer the OP, they work but not as well as an actual window unit in my experience.

I had one in my boat. You run exhaust like a dryer vent outside and the unit cools pretty well.

it's the same thing

The vent pipes on the portable units do not do as good of a job with handling the warm exhaust air as a window unit so in my experience you get a lot of heat off of the portable units making them sort of counterproductive.

A portable AC?

This one only has an exhaust, which means it will suck in outside air from somewhere in the house to cool the room it's in

This one has 2 hoses for air intake and exhaust, but it does cost more.

Good luck, and Godspeed

No they have ones that dont have an exhaust. Maybe its an evap cooler.

ETA: Never mind that one had an exhaust. Let me keep looking

Especially collar for dollar BTU for BTU (of actually cooling) a window unit especially an inverter based one if going to be far more efficient.

The ones with one hose are horribly inefficient since it is drawing the air to blow over the condenser coil from inside the house. This means for every cubic foot of hot air it blows out the window it is pulling a cubic foot of hot/humid ambient air in through the cracks in the hose. That's why they have a special BTU rating that is designed to more accurately reflect the actually cooling. I forget the name but it is the lower number you see listed. The two hose versions pull air from outside blow it over the condenser and return it outside. They are obviously more efficient. The hoses themselves radiate a lot of heat and you can buy insulation kits or just wrap them with bubble wrap if it is in a garage etc where you don't care what it looks like.

BTW I am responding to Stout but he knows this already this is for the OP.

Make sure these have an outside air intake, otherwise the cooling can become counter productive as it will use inside air to move heat out of the exhaust. That will create a negative pressure in your home allowing hot outside air to flow in your house through all kinds of cracks.

It looks like you have to put ice packs in it. In order to cool a space, the heat has to go somewhere, which is why both window and floor units have to have an exhaust. If you are OK with swapping out ice packs then knock yourself out.
